Mission Statement

Mama's Kitchen, a community-driven organization, believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life - nutritious food. Our nutrition services improve the lives of women, men and children vulnerable to hunger due to HIV, cancer and other critical illnesses.

About This Cause

Mama’s Kitchen was established in 1990 by a San Diego caregiver who enlisted volunteers to prepare and deliver free meals to neighbors who were sick with HIV/AIDS and unable to shop for groceries or cook for themselves. In 2004, we launched Mama’s Pantry, a food pantry designed to serve HIV+ San Diegans who are healthy enough to cook but are unable to purchase nutritious food due to extremely low income. Since then, we have expanded our Home-Delivered Meal Service program to other at-risk populations including those battling cancer (2006), and more recently, individuals with heart failure and diabetes (2018). On September 30th, 2019, we delivered our nine millionth meal. In addition to medically tailored meals, clients receive nutrition counseling from our registered dietitians. Mama’s Kitchen envisions a community in which individuals facing critical illness no longer face malnutrition. In addition to these long-term services, we provide Emergency Food Assistance to HIV+ San Diego residents experiencing a sudden need for groceries. Each Emergency Food Assistance grocery bag provides the equivalent of 21 meals. 2020 marks the 30th anniversary of Mama’s Kitchen. During three decades of service to the community, we have never turned away an eligible client, and have never charged a fee for our service.
