Mission Statement

Mama’s Kitchen believes that everyone is entitled to the basic necessity of life – nutritious food. Our services improve the health and well-being of individuals and families vulnerable to malnutrition due to critical illness.

About This Cause

Mama’s Kitchen was established in 1990 by a San Diego caregiver and a group of volunteers to provide free meals to neighbors affected by HIV/AIDS. Over the past 34 years, our Medically Tailored Meal Service has expanded to support other at-risk populations such as individuals battling cancer (2006), congestive heart failure, type 2 diabetes (2018), and, most recently, chronic kidney disease (2020). Additionally, Mama’s Kitchen’s team of registered dietitians provides clients with nutrition education to improve long-term health through increased knowledge of proper nutrition. To date, Mama’s Kitchen has delivered over twelve million meals. We serve our community through two main programs: Our Medically Tailored Meal Service (MTMS) provides breakfast, lunch, dinner and healthy snacks to critically ill San Diego County residents and their children, every day of the year, at no-cost. Meals are home-delivered and tailored to medical needs, dietary preferences, and cultural familiarity. The program supports health outcomes by improving disease self-management, medication adherence, and overall well-being. Our Medical Nutrition Therapy (MNT) provides each client between one and three nutrition counseling sessions by phone depending on their diagnosis. Registered dietitians design personalized treatment plans to address specific health needs, including recommendations for nutritional supplements and dietary changes. Sessions cover topics such as how to use nutrition to manage a diagnosis and reduce disease progression, how to read nutrition labels, and how to shop for healthy food on a budget.
