Mission Statement
Our mission at the Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach (TRCHB) is to empower people with physical and developmental challenges to discover their greatest strengths and gain a sense of self-confidence and self-reliance through the special relationship with a horse.
About This Cause
The Therapeutic Riding Center of Huntington Beach was founded in 1990 by David Allen (Huntington Beach Chamber of Commerce member) with the help of a small group of community volunteers who identified the need to provide equine-assisted activities and therapies for people with disabilities in Orange County, California. One horse and the dedication of these few committed volunteers gave rise to our current 501(c)(3) organization with over 100 volunteers, six instructors certified by the Professional Association of Therapeutic Horsemanship International (PATH), and nine horses. TRCHB offers therapeutic riding lessons designed to enhance the physiological and emotional well-being of individuals with a variety of physical and developmental disabilities including autism, cerebral palsy, spina bifida, muscular dystrophy, multiple sclerosis, spinal meningitis, Down syndrome, vision impairment, learning disabilities, developmental delays of all levels, and those deaf or hard of hearing. Therapeutic riding is a physical, occupational, and speech-language therapy treatment strategy that uses horses to help strengthen and heal people with disabilities. The unique movement interaction between humans and horses helps improve motor skills, balance, coordination, focus, independence, confidence, and social skills. These benefits can be seen in people of all ages from young children to seniors. Disabled people experience movement and mobility in a manner entirely different than that provided in traditional therapy settings. Sitting on a moving horse causes the rider’s upper body to respond automatically to the horse’s movement, helping to increase trunk strength, control and balance while building overall postural strength and endurance. The effects of equine movements complement therapies addressing fine motor control, concentration, and other functional daily living skills. Horseback riding is used to facilitate receptive and expressive language skills, and to encourage communication skills. Besides these physical and developmental benefits, interaction with the horses can have tremendous emotional impact on a person’s life by helping to reduce anxiety and stress while increasing social skills.
