JACOBS CENTER FOR NEIGHBORHOOD INNOVATION

San Diego, California, 92114 United States

Mission Statement

Founded in 1995, JCNI focuses on building communities and lifting lives. A creative catalyst and community convener within Southeastern San Diego’s Diamond Neighborhoods, it improves lives through physical development, economic development, and community engagement programs. The organization supports the transformation of 60 acres into a multi-use, multi-disciplinary innovation district where services, retail, and affordable housing are integrated with cultural and educational assets. Additionally, JCNI works with community organizations and partners to increase residents’ economic opportunities, leadership skills and educational success.

About This Cause

Based on the belief in the power of residents’ shared vision, innovation, and personal investment to transform a community, JCNI offers comprehensive neighborhood amenities benefitting residents. Its 26-year history brings community-centric activities like: Business Accelerator @ Jacobs Center: region’s only startup accelerator focused on low-moderate income founders; offering training and mentorships, connections to regional partnerships, job opportunities and increased access to financial resources. Youth Development @ Jacobs Center: collaborative enrichment programming with established organizations for solutions that equalize opportunity in underinvested communities; specifically, how to encourage academic achievement through the lens of entrepreneurship. Visual Arts @ Jacobs Center: activities celebrating the diversity of Southeastern San Diego with signature programs like Pop-up Art Gallery @ Market Creek Plaza to offer space to enjoy and purchase art made by local Southeastern San Diego artists, and partnership with Common Ground Theater (San Diego’s premier Black theater company showcasing compelling works reflective of the African American experience) offering complimentary access to our premier venue. Outdoor Engagement @ Jacobs Center: innovative outdoor activities to encourage natural resource stewardship and connection with Chollas Creek; making sure that all people have access to parks and outdoor programming as a critical way to increase positive effects on health and quality of life for community. Southeastern San Diego Coalition: joined by Logan Heights CDC, Black American Political Association of California-San Diego, Youth Will and RISE San Diego, the Coalition nurtures a collective impact model to increase neighborhood resiliency through the strengthening of the community-based organizational network.
