To reduce hunger, fight food waste, and improve health in Coachella Valley by rescuing fresh local produce and delivering it to those in need.
About This Cause
Hidden Harvest was founded in 2001, by Christy Porter, and has been gleaning fruits and vegetables from local farms and packing houses and giving it away ever since – always for free, to tens of thousands of needy families and seniors each month. HH has rescued millions of pounds of healthy produce, that would otherwise have gone to waste. Since those early days, HH has been a leader in the local emergency food system, offering only fresh and healthy produce, and always for free. Our farm partners donate this produce to us, but that is just the beginning for the journey (and the cost) to get it into the hands of our “customers”. It must be transported in refrigerated trucks to our warehouse, unloaded and stored in our walk-in cooling space, sorted, washed and packed by our dedicated volunteer team, loaded back on the refrigerated truck and delivered to our Senior Markets and FIND Food Bank – all before it spoils. We provide direct services through Hidden Harvest's own low income Senior Markets - held at the same times and places each month, where Hidden Harvest staff and volunteers set up farmers market style carts of locally harvested fruits and vegetables. The Senior Markets are held in low income senior housing complexes (designated Section 8) and at senior centers in low income neighborhoods. All the “shoppers” are able to choose from the displays of fresh produce what they want in the quantity they want. Many of our low income senior shoppers have told us that these markets are their only source of fresh fruits and vegetables because produce is too expensive for them to buy at the grocery store. HH’s fresh and healthy produce is also distributed to more than 55,000 low income families each month through the local emergency food system that includes more than 80 agencies ranging from small church pantries via FIND Food Bank, our local Feeding America affiliate. Our produce is always free to all agencies large or small.
