Mission Statement

English Springer Rescue America, Inc. (ESRA) is a national organization dedicated to the rescue, rehabilitation and rehoming of English Springer Spaniels. Our nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization of 2,000 volunteers partners with 250 humane societies/private shelters/animal control facilities in 37 states. ESRA volunteers rescue Springers from our community partners, or from their owners who are unable to care for them. Our Springers are fostered, spay/neutered and microchipped before being placed in permanent loving homes. Through their compassionate efforts and commitments to help, ESRA's volunteer members have successfully placed 9,000 Springers in new loving homes. Our agency is rated Platinum by Candid. ESRA has no paid staff. Oversight for our nonprofit is provided by a seven member volunteer Board of Directors which sets policy, oversees the agency budget and expenditures and insures sound relationships with our community partners. Our organization structure includes by-laws, audited financial statements, as well as written policies and procedures covering intakes, fostering and adoptions. ESRA relies entirely on donations, and 90% of our expenses are for the care of dogs.

About This Cause

English Springer Rescue America, Inc. (ESRA) was founded in 1999 By Jan Flagg in California. The organization’s scope expanded and currently serves Springers in 37 states. In 2024, 605 Springers were rescued and 486 adoptions took place due to the dedication of our 2,000 volunteers and 1,300 foster homes. English Springers are as susceptible to impoundment as any dog. They are picked up on the streets as strays or relinquished by their owners because of a move, illness, death, or financial crisis. The success of our organization is due to the dedicated volunteers who work with our community partners and relinquishing owners to rescue a Springer in need. That Springer is screened, placed in a volunteer’s foster home and provided any needed veterinarian care. A description and photo of rescued Springers can be added to our website to assist with their adoption (www.springerrescue.org). All interested adopters must submit an adoption application and be screened by our volunteer staff. Two examples of successful ESRA rescues are: • Holly was relinquished by her owner due to bladder accidents. ESRA arranged for Holly to be examined by a vet who identified the bladder incontinence as a side effect of Holly’s allergy medication. ESRA arranged for allergy testing, and using the results, adjusted her diet to eliminate some allergens. In addition, Holly received allergy shots. Her bladder problem resolved. She was adopted within two months by a family able to provide her periodic allergy shots. • Jaxon was relinquished by a recently divorced mother. Due to her work schedule and family commitments, she left the dog alone for long periods of time. Jaxon cried and shook when she left him home alone. His ESRA foster family worked to resolve his separation anxiety. Within six weeks his crying and shaking stopped, and he was adopted by a retired couple able to spend more time with him. A significant expense for ESRA is veterinary services. All our rescued Springers are spay/neutered and microchipped. An increasing number of Springers arrive with medical conditions that require testing and treatment. In addition, our senior dogs often have chronic conditions that may also require medication. The overall increase in veterinary costs in recent years, due in part to a restructuring of practice ownership, has resulted in ESRA’s veterinary costs rising by 43% from 2022 to 2024. There is no fee to be an ESRA member. New volunteers are always welcome. They can assist with screening, transporting and/or fostering our Springers as well as other supportive roles. We are pleased to provide more information on how you can support our Springers through your volunteer service and/or donation.
