About This Cause
Ever imagine what it would be like to be a child living out of your car, or bouncing from motel to motel, from school to school? Imagine the feelings of insecurity, confusion and helplessness. Sadly, this is the reality for so many in our country. The National Center on Family Homelessness reports that 1 out of every 50 children in the U.S. will be homeless at some time. This is a reality that no child should have to experience. Since its founding in 1999, Solutions has sought to solve this problem of family homelessness. We believe the traditional approaches of temporary shelters and the occasional meal often perpetuate dependence on support with limited focus on breaking the causal cycle of homelessness. At Solutions for Change, we look at things differently. Our focus is assisting the whole individual and solving the whole problem. We know homelessness is not just about nutrition; not just about mental health; and, not just about having a roof over one’s head. It stems from a multitude of causal factors, and will only be solved by a targeted response to meet a variety of needs. We do this with an innovative curriculum directed at breaking down these causal factors: Solutions Academy. Solutions Academy is Solutions for Change’s 700-day program in which each family’s unique needs are assessed and evaluated, then addressed through an individualized case plan that provides them with the skills, knowledge, and resources they need to gain and maintain physical, mental, and financial health. The program offers permanent, independent housing and daily structured programs addressing substance abuse patterns, past personal conflicts, relationship dynamics, histories of violence and trauma and all other barriers to self-reliance. Parents are also enrolled in employment related training which orient and train participants in the soft skills vital for success in any job - suiting up, showing up, and communicating effectively in the workplace. They are also engaged in classes that teach essential financial management skills, as well as budgeting for everyday expenses, such as utilities and rent. These skills allow participants to secure jobs over the long-term and use their newly acquired financial management skills to maintain their self-sufficiency long after the completion of the program. The model is one we we have tested over 25 years in the field, and one we believe really works. Our results agree. Over 93% of our graduating families never experience homelessness again – a testament to the strength and caliber of our comprehensive programs here at Solutions.
