Mission Statement
The Neighborhood Resource Center Fulton (NRC) is an educational and cultural center that provides services for children and adults in the Greater Fulton community located in the City of Richmond's east end. Its mission is to strengthen families. NRC fosters personal growth and community change. Our Vision is a thriving, inclusive Greater Fulton. We build relationships, share resources, and develop skills to enhance each family's life in our community of 4,625 residents, including 1,060 youth. Greater Fulton is one of the City of Richmond’s most poverty-stricken. Its residents are systematically denied the best our culture has to offer, because of low employment, low educational attainment, and lack of local resources. Forty one percent of our residents twenty-five and older lack a high school diploma or equivalent. Low educational attainment translates into low paying jobs. Forty one percent of our families live on less than $25,000 a year.
About This Cause
NRC began as a grassroots initiative, founded by neighbors in March 2002 as a response to the underlying conditions of low-educational attainment and poverty in the surrounding community. In February 2004, a dedicated group of volunteers purchased the old vacant community post office and, with the help of supporters and friends, transformed the building into a vibrant community center. In January 2005, NRC officially opened with an after-school tutoring program, GED classes. and a children’s literacy program. Since that time, we've launched a Financial Opportunity Center, providing credit building focused financial coaching, employment coaching, and income support. We support more than 100 members in that program, seeing 85% of those members each month for coaching. We support 510 families a month in the areas of nutrition, education, and community organizing. We run the only delivery food pantry in the city, delivering to the porches of our neighbors in Greater Fulton. We have a VITA Tax Prep program that provides free tax preparation based on income to those living in Greater Fulton and East Henrico. Our vision is to ensure that we support a thriving and inclusive Greater Fulton and East Henrico. We want every neighbor in Greater Fulton to be able to age in place, on their terms.
