Mission Statement

We enhance the well-being of older people in North Carolina through creative arts programming, education and training.

About This Cause

Center for Creative Aging North Carolina (dba: Creative Aging Network-NC) reduces isolation and enhances the health and well-being of older adults in North Carolina through participatory creative arts programming. We also provide training and education for artists and healthcare professionals who work with them. Through creative self-expression and promotion of the resulting artwork, we are advocating a new way of thinking about our later years. By working to end the last acceptable 'ism' – ageism – and advocating for change, we aim to create a healthier, more positive aging experience using creativity as the catalyst. Research has proven that when older people engage in professionally conducted arts programs, they have fewer doctor visits, take less medication, have fewer falls, experience less depression, increase participation in other activities, and experience better overall health. Located centrally in Greensboro, our 10-acre campus includes a 12,000 square foot building and 1000 square foot house among open fields, wooded hillsides and streams. The building houses our offices as well as those of two smaller nonprofits, 18 artist studios, 3 classrooms, a meeting room, and 2 large gathering spaces in addition to a full kitchen. Although just 3 miles from the bustling city center downtown, the campus feels like a secluded getaway. Benefitting both community residents and our surrounding environment, our work integrates art, culture and community-engaged design strategies to educate, honor and connect older adults to the broader community and natural world. With placemaking a key priority, we routinely garner input from community members including older adults, artists, city leaders, volunteers and colleagues about the vision for our campus and how we can best serve the evolving needs of older adults in our area. The collaborative process of placemaking facilitates creative patterns of use, paying particular attention to the physical, cultural, and social identities that define a place and support its ongoing evolution. We strive to capitalize on our local group’s assets, inspiration, and potential to build our campus into a regional destination that welcomes people from all walks of life, and supports the health, happiness, and well-being of older adults and those who care for them.
