About This Cause
Knots for NICU is a student-led Chandler-based non-profit 501(c)3 public charity that makes hats, headbands, blankets, burial gowns, scent hearts, for NICU babies of all sizes and handmade thank you letters for hospital staff. Hats and headbands are knitted and crocheted - skills that are taught by club officers to new members. Fabric blankets are cut and sewn at club chapter meetings using donated sewing machines from the Phoenix-area communities. Burial gowns are designed and constructed from donated wedding dresses, and sewn at club chapter meetings on donated sewing machines. Scent hearts are cut and sewn material hearts given to NICU parents to hold their scent. The scent hearts are then given to the NICU babies to pass on the smell of their parents to promote bonding. Lastly, the clubs handwrite thank you cards to give to NICU nurses and staff with every donation. Knots for NICU has 80+ student members across two CUSD high schools (ACPHS and BHS), a middle school (AMS), and homeschool members. Club chapters have met weekly during the school year since its inception in 2022, and to date, Knots for NICU has donated nearly 1,500 items to nine hospitals around Phoenix and Tucson (including Chandler Regional Medical Center). Specifically, in 2024, Knots for NICU has made and donated 788 items, held 8 hospital donation events, student members have accrued 2,363 service hours at school chapter meetings creating items, and spent 20 hours engaging in Companionship Crochet with the elderly. Additionally, Knots for NICU partnered with the March of Dimes, Dignity Health Foundation, and HonorHealth Foundation at three separate events to raise awareness for premature babies. Knots for NICU values youth leadership and promotes NICU awareness. Our Youth Officers, Karis (Founder) and Michael (Vice President), reporting to the Board of Directors, oversee Chapter trainings, manage Chapter operations, and conducts weekly leadership sessions for all Chapter Officers. Knots for NICU's vision for growth include expanding companionship crocheting with seniors in care homes across the valley, incorporating cultural burial gowns into the program, and expanding club chapters throughout Arizona, the USA, and Canada to broaden their impact.
