Mission Statement
The mission of the McGuffey Centre (ANC) is to serve as a viable source of support that offers programs to the community's underprivileged and underserved population to improve the social health, physical fitness, mental health, and personal welfare of our residents.
About This Cause
The McGuffey Centre (ANC) is a nonprofit 501(c)(3) organization that provides services and activities to the citizens of Youngstown, Ohio, and the surrounding communities. We are led by the Executive Board of Directors, which consists of the President/Chairman of the Board, Chief Information Officer, Chief Financial Officer, Legal Counsel, Treasurer, and Secretary, and adheres to the Corporate Governance Guidelines. Our staff comprises the Executive Director, Assistant Director, Grant Administrator, and Maintenance Worker. The McGuffey Centre was founded by Mrs. Birdie Welcher on July 1, 1926, to serve the citizens of the McGuffey Heights area of Youngstown, OH. It became a part of the Associated Neighborhood Centers (ANC), a non-profit organization with community centers on the Northside and Southside of Youngstown in the late 1980s. It is currently the only center of ANC that is still in operation. The goal is to continue providing services to Youngstown, Ohio residents and the surrounding communities. In November 2022, a new Board of Directors was formed to assist with the re-organization and restructuring the Centre after the COVID-19 Pandemic. Our immediate goal is to stabilize operations, repair community relationships, and position ANC to seek and request funding from various resources such as government funding, local/city funding, state funding, United Way, Mercy Hospital Foundation, Wean Foundation, Youngstown Foundation, prominent community organizations, and individuals. In addition to securing grants, fundraising efforts will be implemented. Social activities, long-term leases, and room rentals are integral to our goal of being self-sustaining. The community center is located on the east side of Youngstown in the Sharonline Neighborhood. The address is 1649 Jacobs Rd., Youngstown, OH 44505. The hours of operation for adult/senior and after-school programs for youth are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 7:00 p.m. The summer hours are Monday through Friday, 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. for senior programs and youth summer day camp programs. The facility is not just a space but a hub of diverse activities. It is available for rental for funeral repasts, wedding receptions, graduation and birthday parties, reunions, and special events during specified hours of operation. Some of the key factors to ensure that our community center is a success: • Providing programs, services, events, and leased spaces to benefit the community that is based on feedback • Collaborating with local government, nonprofit organizations, community residents, and businesses • Marketing our services through radio, television, newspaper, internet, and social media outlets • Established a new working board that commits to the viability of McGuffey Centre Based on our ongoing research that commenced in 2023, the underserved community population in Youngstown, Ohio, provided feedback through surveys that concluded the primary needs are for social programming, health services, and organized activities. These services are activities and building blocks of a stronger, healthier, and more connected community. Line dancing, chair aerobics, walking classes, sports training, team and individual sports, computer classes, tutorial programs, literacy programs, etc., are being developed as part of the weekly and daily activities of the Centre. A breakfast/lunch café will offer healthy food choices and social interactions. Implementing and promoting the above strategies will increase the opportunity for success and sustainment and inspire and motivate our community. The target markets are as follows: infant/youth programs, elementary and secondary school ages, adults, and senior citizens. The services will encompass the entire city of Youngstown, Ohio, and the surrounding areas. The overall vision is to provide services that build a healthy community. The Centre offers the community a clean and safe learning, social, and physical environment for youth, adults, and senior citizens of Youngstown, Ohio, and surrounding areas. The Centre is the only facility on the Eastside of Youngstown that provides health screenings, instructor-led exercise classes, social events, organization meetings, and private events. Examples of these programs are Mercy Health (line dancing, chair aerobics, and Hip-Hop Dancing), The Boys and Girls Club (youth-centered multi-services from June – September 2023), The Mahoning County TANF 2023 Summer Youth Employment, and Club 7 (fitness training for seniors, adults, and youth). Construction Training & Technology (New Program May 2024), Success after Six – United Way (New Program August 2024). The Centre is implementing new programs and services ranging from educational, social, and mental health wellness. In addition to implementing new programs, the Centre collaborates with other organizations to offer and facilitate various services and programs. Mercy Health, a local healthcare organization, sponsors line dancing and chair aerobics instructors for adult activities. The TANF Summer Youth Employment Program (June 6 – September 30) designated the McGuffey Centre as an approved worksite. Local sports training programs are being designed to expand fitness programs further. This will generate revenue and enable the sharing of results and rewards of joint efforts. Providing diversified services will allow the community to choose services to suit their needs. Along with keeping the lines of communication open between the board and their involvement with the administrative operations of the Centre, a CPA, and an attorney have been elected to the board for professional guidance and compliance. The services of another law firm and CPA are also in place to address the ancillary operations. As funding is sought, an immediate source of revenue is the rental of the auditorium, gymnasium, and kitchen. The current leasing agreements with other businesses and the City of Youngstown Health Department assist with covering overhead costs. The long-term goal is to seek funding from various other sources. This will allow the enhancement of programs and secure capital and structural improvements. The segment of the population that McGuffey Centre focuses on is people who promote a healthy lifestyle through physical activities, mental health services, and social interactions. A recreation center promotes proper exercise habits, which leads to healthier residents. This is done through programs like sports leagues, exercise classes, and recreational opportunities like basketball or volleyball. ANC McGuffey Centre is a community center with structured fitness programs that promote a regular exercise regimen, which results in healthier participants. Youth, families, and seniors will soon be able to participate in programs like sports leagues, exercise classes, and recreational opportunities like basketball or volleyball. A community center provides ideal programs that positively impact a city's image and increase home values. A local community center will attract new residents, especially families with young children looking for after-school and recreation programs. Last but not least, it allows youth to join sports leagues or play pick-up games with others while keeping them engaged and building strong relationships through recreational activities in a safe environment. The increase in participants is essential for measuring the benefits of our programs. ANC McGuffey Centre is the only facility on the east side of Youngstown that offers easy access to surrounding communities and rental fees comparable to other venues; the location, inside catering, and beauty of this facility will increase consumers' desire to utilize our building.
