Mission Statement
We support a school in Jabalpur, India started by our founder, Brahmarishi Vishvatma Bawra. This is a free school for those who would not have the opportunity for a quality education.
About This Cause
From 2008, Brahmrishi Yoga has supported the building expansion of the mission school in Jabalpur, India founded by Brahmarishi Vishvatma Bawra. The land for the school was purchased in 1998 and a temporary school and hostel were built to serve the poorest children from the tribal area of Central India and the city of Jabalpur. The hostel provides room and board for children from the tribal villages. The school offers free tuition, books and uniforms to all children who attend. The curriculum meets the requirements of the State Board of Education in Madhya Pradesh. Children are taught Hindi, English, Sanskrit, grammar, mathematics, science, environmental and social studies, and computer skills. Extra-curricular activities include dance, music, art and athletics. Gyaneshwari Didi has been the school administrator since 2003. She has Masters Degrees in Philosophy and in Education. Under her guidance, a dormitory with administrative space was constructed. Since then, enrollment has gone from 46 students to 530 (including 60 hostel students) from preschool through 12th grade. In 2013, Gyaneshwari was joined by Swami Maitreya, the new principal. She has recently completed her Masters in Education and is now working on her doctorate. Proactive enrollment. The teachers travel throughout the surrounding area and survey the families, uncovering needs and educating the parents on the opportunities available for their children. Typically, this takes much effort. Many parents are not so willing to let their children leave, especially the girls, preferring to keep them at home for chores and work in the fields. Holistic education. The school provides academic training, but in addition, the school aims to develop the whole person, shaping good citizens. Each day commences with physical education and prayers, and all hostel students are given essential chores to do around the school. Most importantly, they are taught to trust and to be trusted. The school has a familial feel and the children are openly tender and caring with each other. Gyaneshwari Didi treats all as if they were her own children. Strength building. Those having difficulties adjusting to school are approached creatively. Teachers work with them until they discover their sometimes latent strengths or interests and then use those as a springboard for inspiring and educating. Gyaneshwari Didi’s philosophy is “Given the right opportunities, they are all bright.” See webpage at http://brahmrishiyoga.org/school.htm for more information.
