Mission Statement
The mission of MAGNET: The Manufacturing Advocacy & Growth Network is to grow the manufacturing sector in Northeast Ohio. Half of the regional economy in Northeast Ohio depends on manufacturers, most of which are small or medium-sized companies. Northeast Ohio’s past, present, and future are integrally tied to the success of manufacturing and MAGNET’s goal is to tackle the tough problems that risk holding our region back from an even more prosperous future.
About This Cause
Since 1984, MAGNET has offered a wide range of hands-on consulting services to small and medium-sized manufacturers (primarily under 500 employees). From engineering expertise in creating machines and collaborative robots to streamlining operational processes to facilitating workforce and apprenticeship partnerships between manufacturers, educational institutions, and social service organizations, MAGNET is at the forefront of moving the manufacturing sector forward. Over the past five years, MAGNET has engaged and worked with more than 2,000 manufacturers across a 24-county region, helped companies generate an additional $1 billion in sales, and created and saved more than 5,000 jobs. Our work in three primary arenas directly and indirectly creates more vibrant communities, increases economic inclusion, and builds a stronger middle class. Growth Services: Small and medium-sized manufacturers, which comprise the vast majority of Northeast Ohio’s manufacturing economy, don’t typically have means to access high-end consulting to improve their outputs, upgrade technology, streamline processes, or develop marketing strategies. This leaves them vulnerable to overseas competition and being left behind in terms of technology and best practices. Through our growth services, MAGNET plugs that gap and ensures that smaller companies remain competitive. MAGNET brings practical, hands-on innovation to manufacturers through operational and process improvements, marketing and sales support, cybersecurity, and engineering design and development, helping companies grow locally and compete globally. MAGNET’s expertise is provided to manufacturers in a fee-for-service model which is subsidized through the Manufacturing Extension Partnership, part of the U.S. Department of Commerce’s National Institute of Standards and Technology. Iterator: Whether the idea is scribbled on a napkin or already in the design phase, product-based startups need significant help to launch. MAGNET’s Iterator, which offers business planning, intellectual property identification, engineering support, and market awareness, is a resource available for Northeast Ohioans. We also work closely and collaboratively with incubators and accelerators around the region to support their physical product startups in a way that uniquely leverages MAGNET’s expertise. Encouraging innovation is a key strategy to spur growth in the region’s economy. Workforce: Over the past several years, as manufacturers have increasingly struggled to fill open positions in their companies, MAGNET’s program offerings have expanded to help companies develop a stronger workforce pipeline and address systemic barriers. MAGNET currently focuses on three areas of manufacturing education: working with youth and adults to interest them in manufacturing careers; assisting transitioning populations, like returning citizens and opportunity youth, through intensive bootcamps that give them the skills they need as efficiently as possible; and training incumbent workers with the skills needed for long-term success. All of our workforce efforts are manufacturer-driven to ensure that training opportunities match open position needs. MAGNET’s support of the workforce development system is focused on scalable solutions that engage communities and manufacturers: community college partnerships; leadership of the Workforce Connect Manufacturing Sector Partnership in Cuyahoga County; and engaging and developing high school students in manufacturing careers.
