Mission Statement
Everyone should have access to healthy, nutritious food. Together with our partners, we provide nutritious food to those in need.
About This Cause
The mission of West Ohio Food Bank (WOFB) states, “Everyone should have access to healthy, nutritious food. Together with our partners, we provide nutritious food to those in need.” WOFB leverages partnerships with different agencies while also continually seeking out additional collaborative opportunities to work together and ensure that those facing food insecurity within its 11-county service area receive nutritious food for themselves and their families. We do this through different channels to reach the most vulnerable populations including: working with our partner agencies to distribute food directly to individuals; mobile food distributions; community-wide food distributions; school pantries and/or providing snacks to schools for the children who have been identified by school personnel as being in need of food assistance; the Commodity Supplemental Food Program (CSFP) or better known as senior food box; and partnering with United Ways and other non-profit organizations to store shelf-stable food boxes so they are easily accessible to organizations located throughout WOFB's service area and who work directly with individuals who may be in need of food assistance. Most of these organizations do not have the capacity to store truckloads of product at one time. The food bank receives donated, purchased, state and federal foods sorts, stores and distributes it back to these partners who work directly with individuals. The outreach that is provided by WOFB could not be done without these valuable partnerships. Food insecurity is one factor in an exceedingly complex equation. A family experiencing food insecurity is often struggling to pay their rent/mortgage, utilities, medical care, or other essential needs – and making difficult trade-offs that compromise their health while perpetuating a vicious cycle of instability. WOFB and its many partners works toward helping people overcome food insecurity and trying to find their way to self-sufficiency. Distributing food and grocery items to people in need through food pantries, meal programs and mass distributions that serve children, adults, families, and seniors who are at or below 200% of the federal poverty guidelines, enables the individual to take money they would have used to purchase food and pay other bills they helping to strengthen the economy.
