Mission Statement

Together we transform the lives of homeowners by improving the safety and health of their homes and revitalizing our communities. Rebuilding Together’s vision is a safe and healthy home for every person. We focus on keeping homes dry, clean, ventilated, pest-free, contaminant free, safe and well maintained.

About This Cause

Originally called “Christmas in April”, the program began in Lake County in 1991 and in Cleveland and Summit County in 1996 with separate affiliates. Community, civic, government, and religious leaders and private citizens recognized the need for additional resources to help those most in need in the community to stay in their homes. At that time the program was a one day a year, done-in-a-day volunteer program that exclusively utilized the efforts of volunteers with donated or personally supplied materials. In 2001 we reincorporated as “Rebuilding Together with Christmas in April” and a few years later dropped “Christmas in April”. For years we worked to build the program in each of the three founding communities growing from serving a few dozen homeowners each year to more than 200 annually. But in time, we realized the need far surpassed the boarders of our respective service areas. In 2010, “Rebuilding Together Summit County” made the decision to expand its service area to include Portage, Stark, Wayne, and Medina Counties and began doing business as “Rebuilding Together Greater Cuyahoga Valley”, in January 2011. In 2014, Cuyahoga County was added after being served well by our sister affiliate, “Rebuilding Together Cleveland”. In 2015, the “Rebuilding Together Lake County” affiliate dissolved and joined “Rebuilding Together Greater Cuyahoga Valley” to form the current regional organization serving Northeast Ohio. Today, “Rebuilding Together” is a nonprofit year-round program that helps to primarily repair and rehabilitate the homes of low-income elderly, disabled, and veteran homeowners so they may live with independence and dignity. We do not construct new homes but work with existing housing to bring volunteers from all walks of life and all faiths together to help eligible recipients remain warm, safe, and dry in their homes. We are part of a national organization and with more than 140 affiliates across the United States and are a leading home repair and renovation program in the country. For more than 25 years, our organization has served Northeast Ohio investing millions of dollars in market value services while working with thousands of volunteers and skilled trades. To date, more than 3,000 homeowners have been served. This sustained partnership with local governments, corporations, workforce development programs, community agencies, faith based and civic groups, and others help us leverage the varied resources within a community to impact the health and homes of those we serve while contributing to the empowerment of the community. Our future vision is to work at the intersection of where the home and health intersect. By building centers of community revitalization, we hope to provide opportunity for young people to enter the trades, provide the tools and education that homeowners need to maintain their homes, help reuse and repurpose deconstruction homes and other items that need a new purpose, and to help communities become the healthy places they need to be.
