Mission Statement
The Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park (the “Conservancy”) is the nonprofit partner and friends group of Cuyahoga Valley National Park. Our main office is located in Peninsula, Ohio; the park itself is a separate entity operated by the National Park Service (“NPS”) office in Brecksville, Ohio. The Conservancy’s mission is to engage public support for the park and provide services to enhance public use and enjoyment of the park.
About This Cause
Established in 2002 and now over 4,000 members strong, the Conservancy’s work has grown substantially over the years and now includes: 1) operation of the Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (“CVEEC”), a 500-acre campus located within Cuyahoga Valley National Park; 2) raising funds for projects not covered by the park’s diminishing federal budget; 3) advocating environmentally responsible positions regarding local issues; 4) offering programs and services to enhance the park visitor experience; 5) marketing the park to increase public use and awareness; and 6) co-management of the park's volunteer program, with 6,300 active volunteers in 2013. By strengthening the Conservancy, our members and donors help maintain northeast Ohio's reputation as a high-quality place to live, with a national park that is free to the public and offers environmental education opportunities for students of all income levels and backgrounds. The park was declared a National Recreation Area in 1974 and finally designated as a national park site (operated by NPS) in 2000. It encompasses 33,000 acres between Akron and Cleveland and currently ranks as the 11th most-visited national park in the country (2,103,010 visits in 2013, according to NPS statistics). Deb Yandala has served as the Conservancy’s Chief Executive Officer since 2002, when the organization was first established as “Cuyahoga Valley National Park Association” (CVNPA). Renamed the “Conservancy for Cuyahoga Valley National Park” in 2011, we continue to promote the park as a premier destination for local, regional and national visitors, as well as increase awareness of the park’s vital preservation of the area’s natural, cultural and historic resources. The Conservancy proudly offers a variety of initiatives and programs, just a few of which include: 1. Cuyahoga Valley Environmental Education Center (CVEEC) which serves 9,000 students each year. Nearly 40% of the 3,000 students (4th - 8th graders) who attend our resident program (All the Rivers Run) received scholarship support from the Conservancy so they could participate. 2. Cultural Arts events and opportunities, just a few of which include "Music in the Meadow," the "Cuyahoga Valley Heritage Series", "Music By Nature" and the John Sieberling art gallery. 3. "Extraordinary Spaces" is our program which offers park facilities for rental to host business meetings, weddings, retreats and other special events, 4. Retail Operations which include 2 stores (Trail Mix Boston and Trail Mix Peninsula), 5. Volunteer Program, which has grown from 2,500 volunteers in 2008 to 6,300 volunteers today (2014), 6. "Trails Forever", an endowed fund campaign to support the park's 100+ miles of trails, and 7. Stanford House, an historic restored farmhouse which provides affordable overnight accommodations for park visitors and groups.
