About This Cause

Sandy Cay Inc. (SCI) was formed in 2000 by a parent who needed services for her son who had a diagnosis of tuberous sclerosis and autism. Effective interventions were not available in rural Bryan at that time and having been exposed to Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) through research and seminars, the parent decided to form a non-profit organization to make ABA and other interventions and services available to others in Bryan and surrounding rural communities. Since its inception, SCI & has benefited over 200 families in rural Northwest Ohio by assisting children with their specific communication, educational, social and/or behavioral needs. SCI has been supported by public and private donations, fundraising and agencies/organizations such as the OH Children’s Trust Fund, Autism Speaks, the Autism Scholarship Program, Family & Children First Council, Easter Seals, Church Women’s United Thrift Shop, Kohl’s Cares, Fraternal Order of Eagles, The Moose Lodge, Youth Engaged in Leadership & Learning, Campbell’s Soup Dollars for Doers and other organizations, civic clubs and businesses. Located in a rural community, SCI does not have the availability for financial support from large companies as metropolitan non-profits may have. However, SCI is fortunate to have support from local companies, foundations, private donors & volunteerism. In 2003, Sandy Cay, Inc. formed The Bryan Center for children with an autism spectrum disorder. The first program of its kind in the Four County area, The Bryan Center offers a full day educational program addressing standard academics and social concerns through a behavioral perspective. The Bryan Center works together with public and private schools for each child’s success. The 1:1 and small group ratio is often necessary for students with such intensive needs. SCI employs about 20 staff members and serves families from multiple rural counties within its three service programs. The Bryan Center is primarily funded through Ohio's Autism Scholarship Program (ASP) but the ASP does not fund services such as art class, speech, occupational or equine therapy so SCI has fundraising efforts & seeks grants to provide those services. Autism is a growing concern nationwide and according to the U.S. Centers for Disease Control and Prevention about 1 in 68 children are affected. Autism is 4 to 5 times more common in boys than girls estimating that 1 out of 42 boys and 1 in 189 girls are diagnosed with autism in the United States. Although autism is a spectrum disorder affecting each individual to varying degrees, its prevalence almost guarantees most people will be touched by autism in some way. The good news is that with intensive, research-based interventions, outcomes improve markedly. The Bryan Center has seen great success utilizing effective interventions such as Applied Behavior Analysis and this success is the motivation to keep moving forward within this challenging field. The Coral Reef Project (CRP) is another division of SCI providing a Mentoring Program for at-risk youth and an 8 week Sandy Cay Kids Summer Camp. Sandy Cay Kids Summer Camp is an 8 week camp open to any child (no diagnosis of any kind required) which draws about 50+ campers each year from the 4 County area. CRP’s objective is to provide services for children with special challenges such as those dealing with bullying, anger, academic failure, life skills deficits, behavior issues or emotional stress. The choices that are made for children today can have a dramatic effect on what the future holds for them tomorrow. This is true not only in the financial realm of saving taxpayers money in avoiding out of home placement, but also in the priceless category of self esteem, quality of life and safety issues that surround the ability to function. Prevention through education and skill building are the underlining themes for all of SCI’s programs. SCI wishes to grow and increase services to more area families. Your generosity will enable this to happen. We appreciate donations of any size and you can be assured that your support will go directly to helping the families we serve.
