Mission Statement
Founded in 2002, SFIAF celebrates the arts by bringing together a global community of artists and audiences and by presenting innovative projects that focus on increasing human awareness and understanding within and across cultures. Our core values are based on principals of cultural and economic equity dedicated to coordinating the shared resources of multiple organizations to reach mutually beneficial goals. In addition to working with larger institutions, we place a high priority on the participation of smaller, culturally diverse entities whose communities have been left out of the prevailing American narrative. Supporting relationships between such organizations and artists is a primary commitment of SFIAF. Since 2003, SFIAF and 100 partners have hosted performances and accompanying educational programs by 600 artists and ensembles from the USA and 60 countries, becoming the largest annual public gathering of international performing artists in the Western United States.
About This Cause
In addition to presenting the work of international touring artists, SFIAF develops long-term relationships with Bay Area artists based on their unique program, infrastructure and capacity needs. The goal is to create cross-cultural performances that will expand their artistic horizons, develop stronger community-to-community connections, have an extended shelf-life for the work and yield subsequent earned-income opportunities. SFIAF is dedicated to coordinating the shared resources of multiple organizations to reach mutually beneficial goals. The organization’s core values are based on principals of cultural and economic equity. In addition to working with larger institutions SFIAF places a high priority on the participation of culturally diverse and smaller entities. Activating and supporting relationships between such eclectic consortia and individual artists is a key component of SFIAF. The sum of the parts is a body of work that would have been otherwise virtually unseen in this country. In addition to presenting multiple local companies, SFIAF has presented ground-breaking artists from around the world; many of whom had no U.S. representation and had rarely (or never previously) performed in this country. From 2003-21 SFIAF and over 100 presenting partners have coordinated, presented and/or produced performances by over 500 arts ensembles from the Bay Area and 60 countries, as well as conducting numerous educational and outreach activities. Examples of international touring artists (nearly all without U.S. representation at the time SFIAF contracted with them) include: International artists who have performed at SFIAF 2003-19 include (most of whom were without US representation when contracted: Aco Tomine (Japan), Agatsuma Ensemble (Japan), Áine Ryan (Republic of Ireland), AKHE Group (Russia), Akram Khan Company (United Kingdom), AKYS Project (France), Al-Khareef Theatre Troupe (Syria), Ambiguous Dance Company (South Korea), Ana Sánchez-Colberg (United Kingdom), Atamira Dance Company (New Zealand), Aurelio Martinez (Honduras), Baobab (Japan), Barak Marshall (Israel), Black Voices (United Kingdom), Byung Ki Hwang (South Korea), Chen-Wei Lee & Zoltan Vakulya (Taiwan and Hungary), Chirgilchin with Yuliyana Krivoshapkina (Republic of Tuva), Cho-In Theatre (South Korea), Cimarron (Colombia), Circus Baobab (Guinea), Cirquantique (Canada), Compagnia Y (Spain), Company 7273 (Switzerland), Company Artara (Belgium), Company Fabrik (Germany), Company Li Sangha (Rep.
