Mission Statement
Ravenwood Health provides comprehensive, community-based mental health services to residents of Geauga County and surrounding communities in order to maximize the autonomy, independence and quality of life for recipients of our services.
About This Cause
Since 1966, Ravenwood Health has provided mental health support services to Geauga County residents and neighboring communities. Compassionate, personalized, and comprehensive programs are structured to support clients of any age, regardless of ability to pay. Founded by Dr. Henry J. Lantner along with other community leaders, an agency was formed during this strenuous time for individuals diagnosed with a highly stigmatized disease. As Dr. Lantner and his team progressed into a more encompassing behavioral health service model, quality of life increased for clients, providing resources to continue recovery from substance use while also balancing physical and mental health concerns. Accredited by the Joint Commission, today, we have over twenty-five programs across nine sites, sensitive to differing socio-economic needs across the county. Our clinical and administrative team has grown to over 150 employees with an annual budget of over $7.5 million. Vicki Clark, CEO at Ravenwood Health, mentions that our counselors see clients with a wide spectrum of disorders. She has estimated the center has about twenty clients on any given day who are also abusing drugs, with an increasing number on opioids. “People come to us in all different phases,” she said of addicts. “We have expanded so we can provide them with a variety of services. Most of the clients have co-existing mental health issues, either disorders that led them to self-medicate with drugs or problems that resulted from the abuse.” Same-day access to mental health care has been at the epicenter of our client treatment model. Individuals can call – or visit – Ravenwood Health before 3pm Mondays through Thursdays and be seen that day by an intake specialist or outpatient clinician, or are seen the next day if presenting after 2pm. Clients leave with an initial diagnostic assessment, treatment plan, and a pertinent coping skill. “Immediate access to care is a critical element of recovery from mental illness, trauma and addiction-related issues,” according to Vicki. “We believe this will make treatment readily available to those most in need.” Reflection of a Ravenwood program that has been available for over thirty years describes our dedication to listen – and innovate – how our team can support the mental health needs of our community. Our Sexual Abuse Program provides trauma-informed therapeutic interventions for sexually abused individuals and their families, to enable them to lead productive, mentally healthy – and abuse free – lives. This sensitive program includes sexually abused children and adults, but also sexual abuse offenders. These offenders must complete a Sexual Aggression Assessment and be realized as someone who can benefit from outpatient treatment. Over the years, specific trauma assessment tools have been enhanced to current, evidence-based clinical standards, for both the abused child or adult, the family and the offender. We emphasize empowerment, identification, and appropriate expression of feelings of victims. We educate on developing healthy boundaries, exploration of relationship issues, on appropriate reunification with the offender, sexuality issues, parenting issues, and others circumstances that may arise. Our clinical team deeply assesses offenders through interviews, social and sexual histories, and many legal reports. Individuals that reside in the community with a low level of risk must take some personal responsibility for the sexual offense, including legal. Violence is not tolerated and empathy must be established. Imagine the stigma the Ravenwood team has lifted regarding victims and offenders of sexual abuse. Think of how many people in our community have a story they should feel compelled and empowered enough to share, as it seems almost guaranteed that a neighbor can relate. Coordination of services with our partner social and health agencies is critical to making this program a success – and accepted by our community – for decades. We are all advocates. Anyone who is facing an emergency as it pertains to sexual abuse, or who needs to report an allegation of abuse can do so by calling the COPLINE at 1-888-286-5665 twenty-four hours per day, three hundred sixty-five days a year, where they will be referred to the appropriate professional. Of note, Ravenwood has joined the movement in becoming a Trauma-Informed Agency. “From SAMHSA’s perspective (the Substance Abuse and Mental Health Services Administration), it is critical to promote the linkage to recovery and resilience for those individuals and families impacted by trauma.” (samhsa.gov). Over the past couple of years, we have certified over twenty of our employees, embraced the culture throughout all departments, and have four on our team certified as Trauma-Informed Trainers. This atmosphere and treatment concept permeates within the care of our clients, then diffusing in to our community, sharing the framework with partner organizations. “ … we invite traumatized individuals to become active participants in their own healing … engaging … in sensory-based and mind-body activities.” (Dr. Caelan Kuban, 2013). The Geauga County Amish have unique ideologies, proposing specific service needs. We provide culturally sensitive mental health programs to our Amish Community, and an office strategically placed within Middlefield to reduce barriers to care for these families. Networks of clients and professionals are created at our Amish Family Support Nights. Often requesting a biomedical approach to mental health issues, our Amish clients are very receptive to medication management and improving mental health. Our Board of Directors has grown to include twelve volunteer community members, ranging from financial professionals to retired psychologists to marketing professionals to small business owners. Many of these individuals have become Honorary Directors, serving our mission for over fifteen years. Highly respected by our community, they serve on committees that afford opportunity to provide their expertise for the greater good of our client programming, as well as influencing private and public funders to give generously. We are a nonprofit agency. We are working hard as advocates of our services for our clients, regardless of ability to pay. We are unbelievably grateful for the sustained support in the form of grants from the Mental Health Board and the United Way of Geauga County. As we push forward our mission, our programs are realized more and more by private funders. Thank you for your advocacy of our life-saving services.
