About This Cause
Our signature Summer Camp Program is targeted at serving children from economically disadvantaged communities in Indiana. For children who qualify for the Free or Reduced Lunch Program at their schools, they will receive our reduced rate for a week of camp. Households with higher incomes will pay a rate based on our sliding scale fee. Out of 305 youth in 2023, 100% of campers received scholarships or received significant discounts based on income. At camp, children will receive three home cooked meals per day and a snack, 24-hour supervision, 8:2 child/counselor ratio, and round-trip transportation to and from camp. This program is offered five different weeks during the summer for 6 days and 5 overnights at the campground located in beautiful Brown County Indiana. Happy Hollow Children’s Camp has worked with Central Indiana youth to provide hands-on experiences that encourage kids to learn about natural world, while in the outdoors. Our goal is to enhance participants’ relationship with their environment by increasing knowledge and awareness of environmental processes and relationships, and promoting stewardship through educated decision making. Also, Happy Hollow seeks to provide innovative learning opportunities that enable individuals, groups, organizations, and communities to strive to reach their potential. These activities we offer may focus on teamwork and team development, interpersonal reflection, personal skill growth, outdoor technical skills, and leadership development, and other social emotional learning (SEL), which we have found to be critical skills needed post-Covid. Professionally trained instructors facilitate participants through a wide assortment of activities such as; archery, arts and crafts, canoeing, fishing, high ropes, horseback riding, swimming and much more. Youth will be exposed to multiple activities that will help to build their SEL skillsets. Including, Anti-bullying Education, improving self-esteem, communication skills, problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills, and peer-relationship skills. Campers will engage with their peers in team building activities such as Campfire Skit Performance. Developing teamwork as their cabin group creates a skit to perform, improves self-esteem, self-confidence, communication skills, problem-solving skills, critical-thinking skills, self-expression, and creativity. Many campers will be able to engage with different kinds of wildlife at camp and learn to ride and care for horses in our equine program. Our structured program is a safe environment and takes the children out of the difficult situations they often face in their daily lives. This positive camp environment allows children to experience the outdoors and fosters an environment for them to learn and to grow. Campers are encouraged to adopt a healthy and fit lifestyle through the many activities and sports introduced to them at camp. Through their successful participation in new activities, the campers gain self-confidence and knowledge that they can use to make positive decisions, overcome obstacles, and accomplish personal goals. These are skills they can take with them when they return to their communities and apply to their daily lives, long after summer camp is over.
