About This Cause
The Humane Society of Hobart (HSH) is a non-profit animal shelter holding municipal contracts with Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago, Indiana. HSH has been serving the community since 1954. In 2018, HSH answered the call from the community to save more lives, improve quality of care, and provide excellent customer service to pets and people in our area. One year later HSH has moved from a 67% live release rate in 2016 and 2017 to an astounding 98.9% live release rate for 2019. HSH did so by completing an organizational health assessment, adhering to the Five Freedoms, providing medical services and vaccinations, working in partnership with area stakeholders, and adopting a compassionate mission to build and strengthen pet families. HSH recognizes the animal human bond as a means of reciprocating joy, stress relief, and health benefits for both the pet and the person. HSH recognizes the magnificent relationships that are built by rescuing and owning a pet. HSH recognizes the benefits pets bring into our lives and the common bond shared between pet owners. HSH is on a mission to build and strengthen pet families. HSH builds pet families by providing intake to stray animals in our jurisdiction and transfers in animals from high kill areas in our country. HSH strengthens pet families by providing pet resources and services to our community. HSH’s Homeward Bound Program has a 48% return rate for lost dogs in our community through the public microchipping program, lost pet social media page, and return in field animal control policies. HSH provides a hub for Low Cost Spay Neuter Services of Indiana to provide affordable spay/neuter services to residents of Lake County. HSH’s Cattin’ Around Town Program provides TVNR services to residents of Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago. HSH’s H.O.P.E Outreach Team (The Helping Our Pets Effect) provides pet food and supplies, veterinary services, TVNR, pet resources, affordable spay/neuter, crisis foster care, pet deposit fees provision, and referral services to targeted areas in need in Hobart, Lake Station, and New Chicago. HSH strengthens pet families by providing animal control and care services, low-cost spay neuter services for cats, microchipping services, crisis foster care services, lost pet/return to owner services, pet food and supply pantry services, and adoptions services to families in our community. HSH views our organization as an animal resource center for pet families. Due to COVID-19 we have seen an increased need for food assistance, veterinary assistance, and crisis foster assistance from pet families in our community.
