JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT OF CENTRAL INDIANA

Indianapolis, Indiana, 46240 United States

Mission Statement

Junior Achievement is dedicated to educating students about work readiness, entrepreneurship and financial literacy through experiential, hands-on programs. JA programs help prepare young people for the real world by showing them how to generate wealth and effectively manage it, how to create jobs which make their communities more robust, and how to apply entrepreneurial thinking to the workplace. Students put these lessons into action, and help strengthen their communities. In central Indiana, we provide in school education program to grades K-12 as well as our experiential capstone programs such as JA BizTown® and Finance Park® Virtual, which enforces the idea that kids learn by "doing".

About This Cause

ABOUT JUNIOR ACHIEVEMENT’S PROGRAMS JA In-School Programs include sequential themes for students in preschool through high school. Volunteers from the business community are trained by JA staff before they make weekly visits to local classrooms to share their professional knowledge and lead hands-on activities. Students learn the basic concepts of business and economics and how education is relevant to the workplace. JA’s In School Programs expose students to business professionals and help to prepare students for lifelong learning. JA BizTown® is taught by teachers using a four-week, in-class curriculum followed by a visit to the JA Education Center where students (a.k.a. “JA BizTown citizens”) operate their own mini-town and act as producers and consumers. Students experience the circular flow of goods, services and resources within a community as they practice the rights and responsibilities of citizenship, manage their own checking accounts, seek business loans and make purchases. Students work in teams to operate successful businesses, manage staff, financial resources, inventory, and customers. At JA BizTown, citizens earn paychecks, pay taxes, consider philanthropic contributions, and have the opportunity to vote. JA Finance Park® Virtual utilizes in-school curriculum and an online experiential learning simulation to offer financial literacy education for students in 8th grade and beyond. During the online simulation, volunteers act as mentors to assist in the development of each student’s personal budget, based on a randomly assigned “life scenario.” The program provides middle and high school students with an effective and innovative way to learn money management and financial decision-making skills. Students can put their learning to the test by making important spending decisions and creating a balanced family budget. JA BizTown® Summer Camp is a five-day summer program that focuses on financial literacy, work-readiness skills and entrepreneurship – with an additional focus on the importance of philanthropy within the community. Based on Junior Achievement’s JA BizTown program for 5th grade students, JA BizTown Summer Camp is appropriate for children ages 9-13. Facilitated by JA staff and guest speakers from local companies and service organizations, morning sessions are spent preparing campers for the task of managing their own businesses during the afternoon JA BizTown simulation. Campers are also given the opportunity to use their creativity!
