Mission Statement
Wabash Center supports persons with disabilities to optimize their quality of life in its broad array of programs to persons ranging from youth to adults including day programs, supported living, respite, employment programs, and after school.
About This Cause
Wabash Center was founded in 1953, when a class of 11 children began meeting as the Wabash School for the Exceptional. Parents came together, determined to open the doors of opportunity, because they realized their children had abilities and talents to share. In 1956, the Wabash School for the Exceptional became a proud partner agency with the United Way. In 1959, vocational training for adults was added to the school. In 1965, the parents handed over the reins to Wabash Center and began a fundraising campaign to build the center a home. In 1968, Wabash Center moved into its permanent home on Greenbush Street. That marked the beginning of what today is known as Wabash Center, serving more than 800 individuals each year. We are proud to have been on the forefront of providing educational resources to children and adults with disabilities. Today, we emphasize potential and possibility by finding and nurturing the abilities of those we serve. For some, it is helping them master daily living skills so they may live as independently as possible. For many, it is providing an opportunity to join the workforce, to make significant and meaningful contributions to the success of their employers. Our programs have evolved but our mission has remained the same. Mission: To optimize the quality of life or people with disabilities or special needs.
