Mission Statement

The Indianapolis Youth Orchestra's mission is to develop and nurture the musical talent of young people in Indianapolis and central Indiana through quality music education and the rehearsal and performance of orchestral masterworks, both traditional and contemporary.

About This Cause

IYO (then New World Youth Orchestras) was founded in 1982 by Susan Kitterman to provide a unique, high-quality musical experience for young musicians in central Indiana. Under the direction of Ms. Kitterman, the New World Youth Orchestras grew in size, increased its performance and educational opportunities, and became an institution of artistic excellence in the state of Indiana. In its first year, NWYO was comprised of a single orchestra with an enrollment of 18. Now in its 37th season, the organization is comprised of three separate orchestras with an enrollment of 220, serving young musicians from the ages of 8 to 18. The Concert Orchestra is a preparatory orchestra experience intended for students who may be new to or have limited ensemble experience. The Philharmonic Orchestra is an intermediate orchestra intended for students who have had previous orchestra or ensemble experience and who wish to further develop their skills in this area. Led by Executive Artistic Director Adam Bodony, Symphony Orchestra is an advanced orchestral experience intended for advanced players of strings, brass, woodwind, percussion, and harp instruments who have had extensive previous orchestral or ensemble experience. Recent notable performances by the Symphony Orchestra include Carnegie Hall in April 2016 & April 2019 and Orchestra Hall at Symphony Center, home of the Chicago Symphony Orchestra, in April 2017.
