About This Cause
Organized in 1982 Freetown Village is a living history museum that utilizes the art forms of theater, storytelling, music, and craft & heritage workshops to teach people about African American history and culture as it relates to Indiana history. The name, Freetown Village, is symbolic to typify many small communities throughout Indiana (approximately 60 communities) where African Americans settled during the 1800s. They settled these communities with the same ambitions and drives as others whom have migrated to America in pursuit of life, liberty, and happiness. Freetown Village brings the stories of these pioneers to life through the powerful mediums of immersive theater, storytelling, workshops, and special events. Freetown Village provides cultural enrichment programs suited for a variety of audiences including youth, seniors, and families. Programs vary in length and are able to tour and reach people in their communities. Freetown Village also provides a summer enrichment day camp for youth ages 5- 14 and year round programs in partnership with schools and other youth serving organizations. Special events include Musical Journey (a journey through African American music); Making a Difference Awards Dinner (honoring four local role models who were introduced to summer campers); The Wedding (theater performance of a post Civil War wedding ceremony); Freetown Village Celebrates Christmas (annual Christmas theater performance with an old fashioned cake walk); Freetown Village Singers (dressed in period clothing, the singers sing and interpret the meanings of many Negro Spirituals); Juneteenth (reenactment of a freedom celebration.
