Mission Statement

Our mission is to strengthen the circular economy in Indiana through waste reduction, reuse, recycling, and composting. Circular Indiana is a not-for-profit, 501 (c)(3) corporation representing concerned citizens, state and local government officials, business, industry and environmental groups since December of 1989.

About This Cause

The IRC began as a grass-roots organization in 1989 formed when stakeholders from a variety of backgrounds with an interest in recycling banded together to increase recycling, encourage waste reduction, and effect positive environmental change in Indiana. In 2021, IRC rebranded as Circular Indiana to broaden our vision. Many challenges exist in our current linear system of take, make, waste, and dispose. The circular economy eliminates waste, captures resources, and restores nature. It functions to keep products and materials in use longer to improve the efficiency and productivity of our resources. Circular systems employ reuse, sharing, repair, refurbishment, remanufacturing AND recycling to create a continuous system. Recycling is an important part of the circular economy, but we also need to go beyond recycling. By rethinking our relationship with materials, we can redistribute the responsibility for managing waste to create a more resilient future. Circular Indiana is the state leader in convening partners within and beyond the industry to form new and strengthen existing relationships, provide timely and relevant education - leading to new infrastructure investments and end market development. Circular Indiana is one of the largest, strongest, and most stable state recycling organizations in the US. We provide leadership among and maintain positive relationships with other state recycling organizations across the country.
