About This Cause
The Greenways Foundation is a statewide charitable trust that provides funding, leadership, and advocacy to grow the presence and use of Indiana's greenways. Our greenways system connects scenic, cultural, historical, recreational, tourist, and economic sites in urban and rural communities. Trails convenient to people of all cultures, ages, and abilities are critical to Indiana's economic growth, the health of Hoosiers, and in developing accessible, livable, equitable communities. We envision a statewide system that provides access to trails for all Hoosiers! We accomplish our mission by advocating for trails in Indiana, collaborating with municipalities and nonprofits, working with state legislatures on policy and funding, providing technical assistance, and through grant making - all to support the trails work and development throughout our beautiful state. The Greenways Foundation is a statewide, charitable trust providing leadership and advocacy in the growth and use of Indiana greenways and trails. We do this by catalyzing action and facilitating cooperation between government and private sector partners, providing technical assistance for community-based efforts, and soliciting and distributing financial resources to support the development, enhancement, and operation of all Indiana greenways and trails. Our primary activities include: Assisting in forming effective local trails organizations Building initial community support for trails Providing startup grants to help local trails organizations build capacity and local support Acting as a source of trails information and consultation to local Indiana governments Promoting best practices in the planning, marketing, design, development, and management of linear parks We promote all types of trails, whether they are for cyclists, walkers, horseback riders, ATV drivers, or canoe and kayak paddlers! We are proud of the many partners and friends we have made along the way, and work closely with both citizen and governmental entities to establish linear parks in a way that maximizes the resources of donors—whether foundations, individuals, or taxpayers. The Greenways Foundation has become the leading voice for these wonderful public amenities. Our History The Greenways Foundation was formed in 1991 with a vision of an interconnected network of trails serving Central Indiana while we played a major role in establishing the Monon Trail with the City of Indianapolis. As the Monon became an overwhelming success with the citizens of Central Indiana, trails were seen as vital and necessary community amenities and interest spread throughout the state. This burgeoning interest led the Foundation to expand its geographic focus in 2006 to encompass all of Indiana. During our three decades of supporting and advocating for greenways, we have built broad expertise in many areas affecting trails and greenways, including trail planning, trails-related marketing and events management, capacity building for trails groups, environmental consulting, fundraising, and government relations. Our Achievements Played a major and ongoing role with the city of Indianapolis to establish the Monon Trail, bringing recognition to and building interest in the value of linear parks as amenities for communities across the state. Established the specialty Greenways Foundation (I Support Trails) License Plate program which has funded $146,000 to date towards 46 trail projects across Indiana through our grant program. Successfully advocated for Next Level Trail Development and Maintenance Fund, to which Gov. Eric Holcomb allotted $90 million. Published a statewide trails map covering the hundreds of trails around the state for every kind of outdoor recreation, including multi-use paths, hiking, mountain biking, water, and horse trails. Helped form a bi-cameral, bi-partisan Legislative Trails Caucus for Indiana to advance trail development and maintenance in the Hoosier state. As of the end of 2020, 35 legislators from both chambers have signed up to be part of the caucus. Promoted and in part funded the connection of 220 miles of Indiana trails as part of the 3700-mile Great American Rail Trail. To date, more than 50% of the GART through Indiana is now complete. Partnered with the Indiana Parks & Recreation Association to conduct six Trail Town Workshops throughout the state. Over 200 participants in Carmel, Evansville, Fort Wayne, Portage, South Bend and Terre Haute learned about this emerging national program, and strategies to promote trails in their communities.
