Mission Statement
Erin's House provides support services for children, teens and their families who have suffered the death of a loved one.
About This Cause
Erin's House is the only stand-alone facility, in the state of Indiana, dedicated to providing peer support services to grieving children, teens and their families. Founded in 1993, Erin's House works with families to prevent the negative consequences of unresolved grief. Research has identified a link between unresolved childhood loss and poor school performance, alcohol and drug abuse, depression, anxiety and an increased risk for suicide. In conjunction with schools and community organizations, Erin's House provides a safe environment for those who are grieving to learn and develop coping skills as they build hope for their future. This important work is done, free of charge and through a force of trained volunteers and generous benefactors - so that Erin's House families can focus on healing and renewal. We provide bi-monthly evening peer support groups. Groups are divided by developmental ages, facilitated by two to three trained volunteers, limited to nine children or teens per group and provide children a safe environment that promotes sharing of feelings and memories. Concurrently, parents or guardians may participate in an adult support group which centers on how they can best support their grieving child. Pizza and cake are provided, as well as age-appropriate activities with their peers that encourage the exploration of grief and the feelings associated with it.
