About This Cause

The Indianapolis Jazz Foundation celebrates the legacy and promotes the future of jazz in Indianapolis and central Indiana through performance and education. IJF preserves, promotes, and celebrates jazz, a uniquely American musical art form, and the important contributions, past and present, of members of the Indianapolis jazz community. Indy Jazz Fest is the preeminent performance event presented by the Indianapolis Jazz Foundation. IJF presents concerts and events throughout the year in addition to the festival week, including three outdoor summer concerts at the Indianapolis Art Center. In 2023 IJF will present a series of legacy concerts to celebrate the anniversary of the 100th birthday of guitarist and Indianapolis native Wes Montgomery. In early 2023 IJF will launch a Virtual Jazz Legacy Museum to highlight70 jazz greats with local ties from the IJF Legacy Hall of Fame. Indianapolis Jazz Foundation’s educational and community outreach programs seek to provide inter-generational mentorship and comprehensive music education both inside and outside of the classroom to student musicians in the Indianapolis area. Programming also involves education and lifelong learning for the community about the contributions and evolution of jazz as a uniquely American musical art form rooted in African American musical traditions and the integral part Indianapolis has played in shaping the genre. IJF employs approximately 100 local jazz musicians as performers and teachers throughout the year. Sixty percent of IJF musicians are people of color and 30% are female. IJF reaches over 20,000 people annually through performance and education programs. Geographically, the IJF audience primarily resides in Marion and the surrounding counties. However, IJF attracts audience from across the entire state of Indiana and regionally, from neighboring states. The IJF audience is 55% white 35% African American, and 10% Other, with 51% male and 49% female, which is very reflective of the overall population of Indianapolis. The audience is diverse in age and income level, as well.
