Mission Statement

The mission of Indiana Canine Assistant Network (ICAN) is to train and place assistance dogs with children and adults with disabilities, while providing life and job skills to inmates who train the dogs for service work inside Indiana correctional facilities. ICAN brings together 3 diverse groups to empower people to live more enriched and independent lives.

About This Cause

Dogs are amazing creatures. Their gifts to humanity are loyalty, love and service. For over a decade, ICAN has been placing dogs into meaningful relationships with clients who need assistance with daily activities. Our dogs are specifically trained to serve children and adults with physical or developmental disabilities. We also place dogs into special needs facilities. Our training philosophy has successfully prepared dogs for a life of service for more than a decade. We firmly believe in positive reinforcement and our rigorous, yet compassionate, 2 year training program enables relationships between human and dog that are based on respect - not power. Carefully screened incarcerated adults train the dogs and have full responsibility to care for and teach the skills these dogs will need to become successful service dogs. These handlers also gain many professional and life skills that help with a successful re-entry into our communities. Please visit our website to learn more about ICAN, the dogs we train, the people who train them, and the difference a dog can make. (www.icandog.org)
