Mission Statement
Shirley Heinze Land Trust is a vibrant partnership of volunteers, donors, professionals, business, and industry working together to preserve, protect and restore significant natural areas in northwestern Indiana. Our mission is also to educate, inspire and invite the public to experience the natural wonders of our unique region.
About This Cause
Shirley Heinze Land Trust is a nationally accredited land trust that has been protecting and preserving ecologically rare natural land since 1981. As a part of our mission, we educate, inspire and invite the public to experience the natural wonders of our unique region. Our work is accomplished through a partnership of volunteers, donors, and professionals. Shirley Heinze’s nature preserves feature significant scenic and ecological value, and most are open to the public for hiking and enjoying nature. Shirley Heinze Land Trust protects, restores, and maintains examples of the entire spectrum of northwestern Indiana’s rich and significant natural communities, including tallgrass prairie, high dune, oak savanna, boreal flatwoods, dune-and-swale, woodlands, marshes, swamps, ponds, fens, bogs, and riparian habitat. Six of Shirley Heinze’s nature preserves are state dedicated nature preserves.
