About This Cause
In conjunction with our mission and core values, we have been providing a summer enrichment program for at risk and low income children of Gallatin and surrounding areas. Our program focuses on children who are struggling in math, science, and literacy. The program meets during the month of June from 8:00 am until 12:00 pm Monday through Friday. The children are taught math skills, stem science, literacy, and art. On Fridays, the children are provided an educational experience by going on a field trip to science museums, art museums, and businesses or factory sites to receive a well-rounded view of the world around them. This program operates with a total of fifty to sixty children who have been accepted by the first come first serve approach, but we will not and have not turned any child down who is in need. These children are currently enrolled in the second through fifth grade. The teachers of the classes are certified and experienced in their areas. At the end of the month the children are given a backpack filled with school supplies to help with the expense of starting a new academic school year. To measure the success of the program, the director communicates with the students during the year to see how they are doing overall in school. The students show her their report cards quarterly and if any child is still struggling in school she tries to look for additional help for the child. A second summer enrichment program is offered during the month of June. It runs from June 1, 2021 until June 31, 2021 operating from 1:00 pm until 5:0 pm. The intention and focus of this program is all about the kids ranging in age from eleven to thirteen. It's about the future, creating real opportunities, giving each kid a chance to succeed by helping them attain the tools necessary to make good decisions in life. The program focuses its special activities on enrichment through the themes of healthy choices, literacy and life skills. The program's mission is to enrich the lives of middle school children through the program experience. The program has thirty to forty middle school students from Gallatin and surrounding communities who participate in the program. The children experience interaction with speakers from colleges, teen pregnancy crisis center, health and nutrition experts, athletes from different sports, and certified teachers. These speakers give these students vital information in order to help them to be successful in high school which will advertently prepare them for the college experience. For example, the athletes inform the students to keep up their grades, do as much community service as possible, and develop good work habits that will be needed now and in the future. Colleges such as Volunteer State Community College, Fisk University, and Tennessee State University representatives prepare them to enter college by informing them of the actions that each of them needs to do at the present time to be admitted into college and be successful once they are enrolled. These students tour the campuses and get a chance to see what college life is like. On Fridays the children are provided an educational experience by going on a field trip to science museums, cultural art and music museums, college campuses, and businesses to receive a well-rounded view of the world around them. These students were academically tested in math and reading to see if each child was functioning on grade level. If the child was not he/she was given suggestions to carry out to help him/her reach grade level. A tutorial online program was issued to the child to work on during the month of July and all year if this program was not available to them during the school year. The projected outcome from these children will be the results of following these kids through middle school and high school. The teachers will stay in touch with them and have a follow-up quarterly meeting to see how they are doing. These program are needed even more at the present with so many children attending classes virtually. In the US News, Erin Richards reported on November 14, 2020 that when millions of students returned to school with remote learning as their only option this fall, with large swaths of them went missing especially in lower-income neighborhoods. Others logged on but did not participate regularly in live lessons or did not submit assignments. The teachers said. the issues have continued for thousands as the holidays approach and even at the present time. Many students will have a major deficit in the skills in their grade level as a result. In addition educators have proven that the lack of in-person connection which many educators and parents say, is often the linchpin for academic success will be another cause of major deficits in children's learning. In addition, On January 15, 20121, Tennessee Governor Bill Lee announced special session legislation addressing K-12 student learning Expected Short-term Impact To track effectiveness, the director keeps in contact with each student in the program. The student shows her their report card on a quarterly basis. If a child is failing, the director finds a tutor for the child. The short-term Impact would be each child is passing and their grades have increased by at least a letter grade. Expected Long-term Impact If we successfully implement these programs, we will see higher attendance in school, above average grades, and the students will have higher achievement scores on the Tennessee standardized test.
