Mission Statement

Asante is a cultural organization that is for everyone. It uses the arts to foster the personal and artistic development in youth and adults from all walks of life to connect with each other and grow. We take the traditions of the African American performing, literary and visual arts to create inspiring performances which educate and promote themes that speak to a global community.

About This Cause

The Asante children's Theatre (ACT) of Indianapolis, IN was created in 1990 with a dual purpose: to respond to the fact that fewer and fewer school-age youth were introduced to and involved in the arts on a regular basis, and to celebrate the unique traditions of African and African American performing arts. In 2003 a volunteer Board of Directors was established and a 501 (C)3 IRS Tax Determination status was granted. In 2018, Asante Children's Theatre became the Asante Art Institute of Indianapolis, Inc. where the Children's Theatre continues its work as a branch of the institute. In addition, we have added 2 more branches, the Artrpreneural Incubator and Community Connections so that we could be more responsive to the needs of the community we serve. The incubator affords us an opportunity to intentionally curate experiences for youth who want to work behind the scenes as technicians, arts administrators, writers, directors, and other occupations that intersect with or support the theatre industry. The community connections branch is where we convene conversations around social issues that matter to our neighbors. It is where our literary program Zora's Daughters resides as well as our Keepers of the Sacred Arts (KOSA) initiative. When a person is connected to Asante, they join a collective of artists and arts professionals that continually seek to grow and help uncover the best that is already within you. No matter what age, race or background, we come together through the power of the African And African-American oral tradition to tell stories that uplift the human spirit and speak to themes that help us all be better for ourselves, our family, our community and the world. We offer age-appropriate programs: Prep4Life is an introductory program to the world of performing arts specifically acting, movement to music, singing and storytelling. It is best suited for youth ages 6 - 12 years old. Prepsters meet twice weekly on Saturdays and Thursdays. Prep UPPER CLASS is for youth who are 12 to 18 years old. Since COVID 19, we have used this program to give young teens a chance to breathe, speak, and heal from their trauma. They learn how to share their voice on social media in a responsible way and in 2023, we will add an "Intro to Filmaking" workshop. We have opportunities for persons 19+ who want to continue to hone their skills in the theatre industry. We also employ them as teaching artists, adult mentors and technicians.
