Mission Statement
Kids In The Spotlight (KITS) is a Los Angeles County-based organization helping foster and opportunity youth to heal and grow from the trauma they’ve faced through the power of storytelling and filmmaking.
About This Cause
KITS inspires our youth to pursue careers in the entertainment industry through partnerships with successful Hollywood talent and workforce development. With 16 years of education, vocational training, and support for the youth we serve, KITS is building a pipeline of Black and Brown entertainment industry leaders gaining higher education, economic stability, and community leadership. Our work includes: • Empowering youth through filmmaking: Guided by film industry professionals, participants (aged 12-24) in our Script-to-Screen program create original short films, using storytelling to face their pain and find their power. The program culminates in the KITS Film Awards, celebrating the achievements of our youth on the silver screen. KITS films are also screened at film festivals nationwide, including the White House Film Festival. Since 2009, over 1,000 participants have created over 100 films with KITS. • Building a pipeline to economic stability: Once KITS has provided training to help youth in transition develop the abilities to write, cast, and star in their own short films, our focus shifts to creating sustainable employment opportunities for KITS youth, which comes to fruition through our Production Studio with Purpose (PSWP). The PSWP primarily operates as a workforce development hub where transition-age foster and opportunity youth, ages 18-24, can further obtain filmmaking skills that lead to paid work in the film industry. • Offering trauma-informed support: KITS provides intensive case management services to the youth we serve, offering personalized support and guidance to address their unique needs and challenges. All KITS participants have access to 24/7 counseling with a trauma-informed counselor from Antioch University. These services also include assistance with education, housing, and other essential resources, helping youth navigate the complexities of the foster care system and transition into independent adulthood.
