Mission Statement
Doctors of the World is an international human rights organization providing emergency and long-term medical care to vulnerable people. When the crisis is over and the cameras leave, we stay for as long as it takes to build better medical infrastructures. We seek out and defend the inconveniently unhealthy and target underlying medical issues. We don’t drop in for quick fixes - we empower local communities and build sustainable, robust healthcare infrastructures, both here in the US and abroad. We believe that access to consistent, quality medical care isn’t a privilege but a human right.
About This Cause
Doctors of the World USA is the US chapter of the global Médecins du Monde (MdM) network, an international human rights organization made up of 16 chapters around the world working on both domestic and international health projects. Through innovative medical programs and evidence-based advocacy, Doctors of the World empowers excluded people and marginalized communities to claim their right to health while fighting for universal access to healthcare. This includes victims of natural disasters, famine, disease, armed conflicts and political violence, refugees, dis- placed persons, minority groups, the homeless population, drug users, and all those who are excluded from healthcare. Doctors of the World works also as an intermediary between marginalized people and their governments, administrations and international institutions. Likewise, Doctors of the World’s founding principles are based on the collaboration with local partners and their support. The Médecins du Monde network is currently intervening in 74 countries around the world through more than 330 programs to improve access to healthcare for almost 6 million people.
