Mission Statement
Diversity in Health Training Institute (DHTI) strives toward making healthcare in the U.S. more diverse, equitable, and inclusive for all. Our mission is to make healthcare accessible and affordable for high quality care that is primarily focused on serving communities of color and under-served immigrant population. Through DHTI's initiatives and programs, we strive toward equity in health, from training a diverse workforce to enter healthcare professions to reducing the stigma associated with seeking care and increasing better quality of care to underrepresented populations. DHTI believes a major step toward health equity is through education, for every persons, policymakers, and healthcare professionals.
About This Cause
DHTI is an East Bay based non-profit organization established in 2011 by then Alameda County Supervisor Alice Lai-Bitker to advance workforce development and community wellness with and for immigrants. Our approach to Health and Well-being is whole person-and community-centered, focused on community vitality and belonging, and promotes health equity and social justice. With the passing of the Affordable Care Act in March 2010, there was a need to further address the shortage of healthcare professionals and in particular, a healthcare system that can connect with the growing diverse immigrant patient population. Since 2011, DHTI has worked with over 600 refugees and immigrants, hailing from over 68 countries, representing over 42 languages. Our Healthcare Career Pathways Initiative works with newcomers to pursue careers in health by offering career coaching, exploration, planning, and navigation support; professional and intercultural skills workshops; and linkages to work-based exposure and learning. Now more than ever, DHTI’s mission is critical as we are faced with an unprecedented pandemic. In 2020, program participants supported local responses to COVID-19 through placements at health centers providing testing. Our community wellness strategies include education campaigns on civic engagement and public health issues such as Census 2020 and COVID19, and improving service identification, navigation, and referral to mental services and intellectual and developmental disabilities. DHTI is a trusted community resource with our healthcare workforce and community wellness initiatives due to our diverse staff who reflect the language, culture, and experiences of the community and are able to deliver services with culturally and linguistically appropriate approaches. All staff members identify as people of color, and majority of staff as refugees or immigrants themselves, and collectively we speak over 15 languages and dialects in addition to English, including: Arabic, Burmese, Bhojpuri, Bhutanese, Chinese (Cantonese and Mandarin), French, Hindi, Italian, Nepali, Persian, Punjabi, Spanish, Tagalog, Urdu, and Vietnamese.
