About This Cause
Vanderbilt University Medical Center (VUMC) is one of the nation’s leading academic medical centers and is the largest comprehensive research, teaching and patient care health system in the state of Tennessee. VUMC’s clinics receive over 2 million patient visits per year. For the fiscal year that ended June 30, 2017, VUMC had approximately 65,000 inpatient discharges and performed more than 67,000 surgical operations (inpatient and outpatient), making it the largest health care facility in Middle Tennessee. VUMC is also the largest employer of non-governmental employees in Middle Tennessee, with more than 22,000 staff, over 2,700 of which are physicians, advanced practice nurses and scientists appointed to the Vanderbilt University faculty. VUMC leads the nation in DNA-based electronic medical records research and serves as the National Institutes of Health’s (NIH) eMERGE (Electronic Medical Records and Genetics) coordinating center. The Medical Center’s DNA resource, BioVU®, is one of the world’s largest genomic repositories linked to electronic health information. In 2016, VUMC was selected by the NIH to lead the Data and Research Support Center for the Precision Medicine Initiative Cohort Program (now referred to as “All of Us”), to establish a national cohort of over 1 million volunteers for the study of genetic, environmental and lifestyle factors affecting the nation’s health. The Medical Center has a fully integrated faculty practice plan (the “Vanderbilt Medical Group”), graduate medical education programs with more than 1,000 trainees across all ACGME-approved specialties and a distinguished array of research programs that place it among the nation’s top institutions receiving NIH funding. Housing one of the nation’s first NIH Clinical Translational Science Award (“CTSA”) centers, VUMC serves as the designated NIH coordinating site for all 60 CTSA clinical research centers in the U.S. VUMC is at the forefront of biomedical informatics discovery and translation of basic science to clinical practice, launching both the Pharmacogenomic Resource for Enhanced Decisions in Care & Treatment (“PREDICT”) and the Personalized Cancer Medicine Initiative (“PCMI”) in 2010 to empower providers and patients with interactive electronic tools to facilitate genetically informed clinical decision-making at the point of care. VUMC is the recipient of top accolades by the National Academies, the Magnet Recognition Program, the Leapfrog Group, and has been named a Top Hospital by Truven Health Analytics 14 times. In 2017, U.S. News & World Report ranked VUMC the best hospital in Tennessee for the sixth consecutive year, with 11 nationally ranked and high-performing adult specialty programs, and 10 out of 10 pediatric specialty programs in the Monroe Carell Jr. Children’s Hospital. Best Doctors in America named 243 VUMC physicians “Best Doctors” in 2017, more than twice as many physicians as any other area health care provider. In central Tennessee VUMC is the market leader, ranking No.1 in 21 of 28 adult inpatient services and 27 of 27 pediatric services by the University Health Consortium. Vanderbilt University Medical Center's mission is to be a leader in health and wellness through preeminent programs in patient care, clinical training and research, and as a nonprofit institution, the Medical Center depends on charitable giving at all levels to advance these important efforts. Gifts large and small keep Vanderbilt University Medical Center on the leading edge of world-class health care and discovery to enable the best care for patients everywhere.
