Mission Statement

Mission Statement: First Step Communities (FSC) will create interim housing and emergency shelter communities where people experiencing homelessness can live in safety and dignity, while receiving the services they require to facilitate their taking the first-step out of homelessness.

About This Cause

Our Programs First Step Communities (FSC) runs three successful shelter programs: The Grove, North A Street Campus, and Roseville Road Campus. All programs are low-barrier and designed to support the most vulnerable, unsheltered adults and transitional age youth experiencing homelessness in Sacramento. The Grove is a tiny-cabin community that provides emergency bridge housing for transitional age youth (TAY) ages 18-24. This program goes beyond offering shelter; it embodies a comprehensive approach to empower and uplift young individuals. FSC collaborates with SHRA and the pastor of St. Paul's Church of God in Christ to make this possible. North A Street Campus is an 80-bed adult shelter located in the River District. This program operates with the support of the Sacramento County Department of Homeless Services and Housing. Additionally, we manage a Sanitation Program, offering unsheltered individuals access to restrooms, water, phone charging services, and a phone. Recognizing the area's high population of chronically homeless individuals, FSC has organized health fairs and job fairs to provide additional support. Roseville Road Campus is a pallet home and travel trailer shelter, operated in partnership with the City of Sacramento. This program caters to individuals resistant to traditional shelters for various valid reasons, offering them their own space within a community while providing access to support services. Our Services Every individual who enters an FSC program receives: temporary shelter, daily meals, access to restrooms and showers, healthcare connections, community spaces, support groups, and wrap-around case management services. FSC strives to bring supportive services onsite, eliminating barriers to critical resources. We have partnered with Life Practice Counseling Group to provide onsite individual and group therapy. Additionally, UC Davis School of Nursing and Sacramento County offer monthly medical care at Roseville Road Campus. The Willow Clinic, run by a team of UC Davis medical students, operates a free medical clinic at North A Street Campus every Saturday. FSC believes in collaborating with the community and actively invites service providers to their programs. Low Barrier FSC exclusively operates low-barrier shelters, ensuring minimal entry requirements for individuals in need. Mental health symptoms, struggles with addiction, criminal backgrounds, and disabilities do not disqualify someone from accessing a safe place to sleep. FSC believes that everyone deserves access to vital support and resources, guiding them towards a path of stability.
