Soul Food Cypher (SFC) preserves and elevates the craft of freestyle rap and lyricism through safe & nurturing public cypher events and in-school workshops.
About This Cause
For more than a decade, SFC has hosted cypher events, performances, and workshops that educate, heal, and connect people through positive experiences within the craft of Freestyle rap. Since day one, our aim has been to provide lyricist (rappers) with a safe and nurturing environment, where their voices and artistry can grow, while passing this rich tradition to the next generation. Some Highlights Include: - Being the longest re-occurring cypher based and presenting organization - Has held over 130 curated cypher events over the past decade - 600+ Workshops & Performances Nationwide - Served more than 10,000 individuals - Served 2,500 children in classrooms and workshops throughout the country - Trained over 40 Artists on performance and professional best practices; provided employment opportunities in Education and entertainment - Hosted 2 online cyphers per week during covid-19 (2 years) WordShop Program Soul Food Cypher’s after school WordShop is designed to develop students' social emotional learning, foster literacy, and meet their academic needs through the art of extemporaneous rhyme (freestyle rap). The curriculum focuses on developing communication skills, tier two and three academic vocabulary, literary devices and social emotional learning through freestyle lyrical exercises. Students that successfully complete WordShop can spontaneously present information in a concise manner and are confident public speakers. They utilize new vocabulary and literary devices that they have learned in their speaking and writing. Our WordShop scholars also demonstrate self-management, social awareness and self-awareness by expressing themselves through freestyling. Our program develops students' abilities to share their sentiments about current events and their lives in a positive manner. As students develop a passion for the art form of freestyling, they also receive a historical overview of hip hop culture. Most importantly, they learn all of this while having fun. 100 – Monthly Cypher Event ‘100’ is Soul Food Cypher’s monthly cypher event that celebrates the creative, improvisational, and communal aspects of Hip-Hop culture. This event is free and open to the public. It’s held every 4th Sunday in honor and reverence to the cyphers that birthed Jazz in Congo Square in the 1700s Membership Program Emcees are one of Atlanta’s greatest but underutilized assets. SFC recognizes this and values emcees for their ideas, intellect, and lives lived. Our Membership program is built on our core values of respect, responsibility, and knowledge; we welcome emcees into this family who share these values. Additionally, we offer training and provide employment opportunities to select members to represent our brand and organization in workshops and performances. Performances + Activations Over the past 10 years, SFC has both performed on stages and produced activations throughout the country. Similar to the Harlem Globetrotters, SFC Emcees put on shows and serve as ambassadors to the craft and culture. Each of our performances and activations are curated and customized to explore specific themes and topics through freestyle rap. Like a great freestyle, no two performances are the same. Your financial support ensures this rich craft and tradition of freestyle lyricism survives, thrives, and can be passed to the next generation. *Help Preserve an Atlanta/southern cultural institution Improvisational Rap has deep roots and connections with Jazz music, furthermore, the west African Griot. These improv and storytelling traditions have persisted through the transatlantic Slave Trade, and have hardened into a component of survival. The cypher connects youth and community to history in the now, and helps keep the memory of people, place, and culture. *Help us change the Rap on Rap Read the headlines - theres been an unfortunate trend and raise of high profile murders of emcees. Now more than ever, it’s dangerous to be an emcee. At Soul Food Cypher, we provide a safe and nurturing environment/platform that counters the narrative of the news, to showcase the genius, skill, and power, that results from emcees coming together to use their voices as both expression and tool. *The cypher is not a battle In fact it is the opposite of a battle. The cypher builds instead of destroying individuals. The cypher connects people of different communities, races, ages, and other identities. The cypher is a rare place where people genuinely listen to one another and share. Through challenging lyrical exercises that push emcees to improve while collaborating with one another, the cypher celebrates diversity, but also demonstrates how similar we are. *The cypher is a healing space Often times in urban communities, access to affordable therapy to process trauma is rare. Many of our community institutions and places for healthy socializing are disappearing. Soul Food Cypher is equal parts Hip Hop church, townhall, and group art therapy. In our cyphers, being heard and listening to others, reinforces that we are valued, and our lives and experiences matter.
