About This Cause
Lions Club of Woodbridge Charities, Inc., (a.k.a. Woodbridge Lions Club) serves to ensure all community members have access to nutritious foods, prevent avoidable blindness and improve the quality of life for people who are blind and visually impaired. Woodbridge Lions Club provides support for the needs of children and families affected by childhood cancer through impactful service activities and serve to reduce the prevalence of diabetes and improve quality of life for those diagnosed. Woodbridge Lions Club serves to sustainably protect and restore our environment to improve the well-being of all communities. Our service activities include but not limited to: -Screening 1,735 Prince William County School students (2021-22) for vision problems and referred 362 children (referral rate of 20.86%) for follow up with an optometrist or ophthalmologist. We also screened children in preschools. -Collecting donations of food from Food Lion, Olive Garden and Wawa every Tuesday (even during the COVID-19 pandemic) and delivering the food to the ACTS Hunger Prevention Center which serves eastern Prince William County. During July 2021 – 30 June 2022, we picked up and delivered to ACTS 7.27 tons (14,545 pounds) of food. -Leading the collection and delivering 396 winter wear items to the Mother of Mercy Free Medical Clinic where the coats and clothing were distributed to clients in need. -Buying and delivering healthy snacks for children every month in the homeless and women in Prince William County, VA shelters. -Recycling eyeglasses monthly at the Park West Lions Clubhouse in Manassas. On average, we collect and recycle about 300 pairs of donated eyeglasses per month from the 39 Lions Eyeglass Recycling boxes that are out in the community. -Working with County Social Services to identify 3 foster teens that we then provide with Christmas cards, gifts, and a computer. Older teens can be more difficult to place and often don’t get gifts and recognition of younger foster children. -Laying Christmas wreaths at the Quantico National Cemetery every year for the last 15 years. -Rebuilding and maintaining Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp (Clarke County, VA). We repair, re-roof, power wash, paint, clean, improve common areas, etc. Our club also donated to the Northern Virginia Lions Youth Camp to be used for improving Camp infrastructure. -Picking liter (adopt-a-spot) at Westridge Elementary School. -Partnering with Sam's Club to celebrate parks, flowers, and trees in honor of Virginia’s Arbor Day. In cooperation with Prince William County Parks, Recreation and Tourism, Woodbridge Lions and Sam’s Club volunteers bought and planted 84 flowers, cleaned two parking lots, cleaned six pavilions, a marina, a walking trail, and collected 12 bags of trash at Lake Ridge Park in 2023. -Providing funding for LEARNS (Lions Empowering & Aiding Regional Nurses in Schools) for 23 eastern Prince William County Schools’ nurses and staff to receive LEARNS software for training and treating children with diabetes. -Working with school librarians to select and provide about 250 books to each of 4 elementary schools each year through our Literacy Program. -Supporting Foundation Fighting Blindness (FFB) through participation and monetary contributors to FFB “Vision Walk” event that is held every spring. -Donating to Summer Grace Foundation Childhood Cancer, Lions Club International Foundation (LCIF), and Lions of Virginia Foundation (LOVF) to recognize local medical professionals.
