Mission Statement
SameSame was founded to provide private, identity-affirming and contextually relevant mental health support to LGBTQI+ youth living in places where it's difficult or even illegal to be different.
About This Cause
Across the world, LGBTQI+ youth suffer from mental health challenges at far higher rates than their peers — especially in one of the 70 countries and territories that criminalize consensual same-sex activity and forms of gender expression. At a time in their life when they most need guidance and support, queer youth often have nowhere to turn. The team at SameSame is a collective of queer clinicians, product designers and software engineers who came together in late 2021 to build what we wish we had when we were young. Our WhatsApp chatbot provides young people in South Africa and Zimbabwe with access to an adapted version of an identity-affirming therapy course that has been proven to boost the mental wellbeing of LGBTQI+ youth. We're using WhatsApp because it's the most widely used messaging platform on the planet, because messages are encrypted and because it's light on data — making it affordable to young people living in places where data charges are still expensive. We are working with young people in South Africa and Zimbabwe to design and test new features and improve the chatbot.
