About This Cause
The Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum (“Nature Museum”) serves as the urban gateway to the world of nature and science. Our mission is to create a positive relationship between people and nature through collaborations, education, research and collections, exhibits, and public forums that foster urban connections to our region’s nature and science. Our vision is to be the leading voice on urban ecology and sustainability as it relates to the Midwest/Great Lakes region. Established in 1857, the Chicago Academy of Sciences has been committed to educating the public for 160 years. In 1999, the Academy established the Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum. Serving as the Academy's permanent home and a platform for collaborations, exhibits, programs, and educational opportunities, the Nature Museum is located in an eco-friendly building amidst the abundant wildlife of Lincoln Park, on the shore of Lake Michigan. Since opening, the Nature Museum has welcomed 3.6 million visitors and attracts over 308,000 students, teachers, and families annually, maintaining our place as Chicago’s 6th largest museum. In early 2015 the Nature Museum was reaccredited by the American Alliance of Museums meaning that the institution reaches the highest professional standards for education, public service, and collections stewardship. The Nature Museum has now consecutively held this status since 1979. The Illinois Association of Museums (IAM) named the Chicago Academy of Sciences / Peggy Notebaert Nature Museum 2015 Leader Institution of the Year. The award came with kind comments from our peers at IAM. “The Academy’s and Museum’s commitment to educating the public about nature and science is apparent in its exhibitions, programming, and conservation and restoration efforts. We applaud the significant and exceptional contributions the [Nature Museum] has made in the community and our state.”
