About This Cause

The Neighborhood Boys Club (NBC) was founded on October 19, 1931 by Robert Buehler and Richard Valentin, and incorporated as a non-profit organization on April 24, 1935. A pilot Girls Program was launched in 1991 and the organization name was changed to the Neighborhood Boys and Girls Club(NBGC) in 1997. Since its inception the NBGC has recognized that children are our most valuable resource. Our society places great stress upon them due to the challenges of broken homes, poverty, gangs, drugs, working parents, single parent homes and a lack of positive peer and adult role models. Supporting young people before they fail and helping them grow physically, emotionally, socially, culturally, and intellectually is an important role that NBGC has undertaken through its year round programming. The NBGC is a unique organization where a family can exchange a registration form for a lifetime of learning and support for their children. Parents come to us for a variety of reasons, whether for athletic programs, out of school activities, tutoring, a place for their children to make friends, or a safe and supervised environment. Whatever the reason for walking in the door, the NBGC is a place where every child can leave their problems behind. Parents come to rely on the organization as an extension of the family. The NBGC currently serves over 1,500 boys and girls. Approximately 54% of the members' families are from moderate to poverty level income levels; 69% of the membership is of Hispanic, African-American, Middle-Eastern, or Asian bi-racial heritage. Approximately 42% of our members reside in a single parent home and 75% attend public schools. The membership is 64% boys, 36 % girls. The NBGC encompasses the Northcenter, Roscoe Village, Lincon Square and Albany Park areas. The NBGC offers a diverse program of instructional athletics, leadership development programs and summer enrichment camps. Additional programs include an After School Kids Club, Computer Lab, Tutoring, Girls on the Run, Arts & Crafts, Community Service, Drop In Game Room, Family Nights and Big City Mountaineers leadership training. Seasonal sports are a major part of the program during the school year. Youth have the opportunity to develop their natural abilities through participation in football, soccer, basketball, volleyball, floor hockey, baseball and softball. Sports teams are organized by grade and neighborhood so that team members live near, and probably attend school with each other. Every child plays an equal amount of time regardless of skill. By far the most important program is our Youth Leadership Program. The vision of our founders was to create a culture of peer-led leadership. A dedicated group of approximately seventy youth, ranging in age from 13-22, are responsible for each and every member. Many of these amazing teens are ranked at the top of their class academically and serve as class officers or student government representatives. Most participate on one or more school sports teams or are involved in multiple extra-curricular programs. These trained middle school, high school and college aged members supervise and work “hands on” with the daily programs and activities of the younger members. These “teen youth leaders” learn to plan, promote, develop, implement and evaluate these programs, while participating in a formal training program conducted by youth development professionals, trained adult volunteers and teen peer leaders. Workshops on leadership, motivation, team building, program development and specific athletic skills such as coaching, officiating and teaching the younger members are all part of “Building Better Men & Woman”. Since our inception in 1931, the NBGC has relied on its youth leaders to assist the Program Director in all areas of the clubs programming. Through the last 83 years this program has proven to be an intricate part in the development of our youth. We recently renovated our small gym and would like to utilize this facility as a baseball training room. This would be a significant boost to the Clubs athletic programming and would allow training to be conducted rain or shine. The participation in our recent basketball season was at a record high, with over 525 youth playing on teams. With attendance on the rise and having an indoor baseball training facility, we can continue the growth of our baseball program. NBGC would be well on its way making young ball players (boys and girls) ready to make the “big leagues” Borrowing the famous line….”Build It…THEY WILL COME”.
