Mission Statement

Northwestern Settlement nurtures, educates, and inspires children and families in need, empowering them to take personal responsibility and attain self-sufficiency. Since our founding in 1891 by Northwestern University (as a separate and financially-independent institution) we have offered education, social services, and arts programs to Chicago's inner-city West Town community.

About This Cause

Education - Rowe Elementary School, a public charter school established in 2009, serves nearly 700 “scholars” in grades K-7 (growing by one grade level each year until reaching full K-8 capacity in 2016) from West Town and across Chicago. Northwestern Settlement has vast experience in charter education, having co-founded and co-operated the Noble Network of Charter Schools from 1999-2008. - The School Age Program supports academic learning while guiding and enriching the lives of 150 children ages 5-12 after school during the school year (After-School) and all day during the summer (Summer Adventure Camp). - House In The Wood is Northwestern Settlement’s year-round residential camp in Delavan, WI – one of the last remaining camps that exclusively serve low-income and inner-city youth from Chicago. During the fall and spring, House In The Wood conducts hands-on environmental education residencies in its Outdoor Education Center. - Our Head Start site offers full-day preschool programming for up to 78 children ages 3-5 years old from low-income families, as well as supportive parenting services. - AmeriCorps Project YES! places recent college graduates in area schools, to support activities that aid academic achievement, foster an ethic of service, and provide positive alternatives to destructive behaviors. Social Services - The Emergency Services Program provides basic human needs assistance to individuals and families in critical need. Components include a food pantry, clothing and household needs distribution, referrals, health and nutrition programming, and holiday assistance. - The Golden Agers Club provides social support activities for adults aged 55 and over, and Emergency Services targeted to seniors’ unique needs. The Arts - Adventure Stage Chicago (ASC) creates transformative theatre for young audiences and their families. Each year, ASC produces mainstage shows, operates arts residencies in underserved public schools, mentors youth, and supports community and civic engagement. - The CCT Gallery presents art shows featuring student and professional artists that are free and open to the public.
