About This Cause

The Selfhelp Organization originally began in the 1930’s in New York City as a volunteer organization founded by European immigrants and refugees that were able to escape Nazi tyranny. They were devoted to helping others like themselves by providing services to aid needy and penniless emigres from Central Europe. In 1938 a group settled in Chicago in the south side neighborhood of Hyde Park. Assistance with jobs, housing , childcare the language and a variety of other services that supported their transition was available to newcomers. Social and cultural life was also enriched through Selfhelp with welcoming parties, the celebration of Jewish holidays and musical concerts that brought the community together. The organization grew through fundraising and in 1949 Selfhelp was incorporated as a not for profit organization and in 1950 they purchased an old Drexel Boulevard “Mansion” that was converted into a “home for the aged” to accommodate 19 residents. This represented a new place to call home in America that was comfortable and affordable, offering companionship and family life. Jewish cultural traditions were honored and German was spoken that eased their adjustment to the American way. Almost 10 years later, the home quickly grew to accommodate 41 residents. Membership of Selfhelp also grew from a handful of people to several hundred. After gaining the respect of the community on the South Side and reaching its capacity the need to open a second location was determined. In 1963, a north side location was established, that still exists today at 908 W. Argyle in Chicago. The four story building accommodated 70 residents with apartments, most of whom were survivors of Nazi persecution. Since then the SelfHelp home expanded in the 80’s with a nine story addition including two health care floors for those needing more nursing assistance and short-term rehabilitation. Selfhelp has given refuge to more than 1,000 Nazi persecutions from Central Europe, during its time. Today, the Selfhelp Home is home to 150 residents, with a dwindling population of holocaust survivors, the home still maintains its culture of preserving the dignity of elders and providing the highest quality of life in a culturally rich environment. SelfHelp provides a full continuum of care for residents all under one roof. 70 apartments for seniors- studios and 1 bedroom where they may live independently or with assisted living services. Selfhelp offers 72 skilled nursing beds including a new Medicare approved Health and Rehabilitation Center for residents and seniors in the community.
