Mission Statement

Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place.

About This Cause

We're 2.6 million strong - 1.8 million girls and 800,000 adults who believe in the power of every G.I.R.L. (Go-getter, Innovator, Risk-taker, Leader) to change the world. Our extraordinary journey began more than 100 years ago with the original G.I.R.L., Juliette Gordon "Daisy" Low. On March 12, 1912, in Savannah, Georgia, she organized the very first Girl Scout troop, and every year since, we've honored her vision and legacy, building girls of courage, confidence, and character who make the world a better place. We are the preeminent leadership development organization for girls. And with programs from coast to coast and across the globe, Girl Scouts offers every girl a chance to practice a lifetime of leadership, adventure, and success. Our Mission: Girl Scouting builds girls of courage, confidence, and character, who make the world a better place. Girl Scout Promise: On my honor, I will try: To serve God and my country, To help people at all times, And to live by the Girl Scout Law. Girl Scout Law: I will do my best to be honest and fair, friendly and helpful, considerate and caring, courageous and strong, and responsible for what I say and do, And to respect myself and others, respect authority, use resources wisely, make the world a better place, and be a sister to every Girl Scout. In 2009, four Girl Scout councils merged to form Girl Scouts of Northern Illinois (GSNI): Girl Scouts - Fox Valley Council, Green Hills Girl Scout Council, Girl Scouts - Sybaquay Council, and Girl Scouts - Rock River Valley Council. Now, we're nearly 20,000 strong - 15,000 girls and 5,000 adults who believe every girl can change the world. Our girls develop leadership skills in 16 counties including parts or all of Boone, Carroll, Cook, DeKalb, DuPage, Jo Daviess, Kane, Kendall, Lake, LaSalle, Lee, McHenry, Ogle, Stephenson, Whiteside and Winnebago. GSNI is plugged into our community! We provide quality resources, support, and training to each of our 42 geographic service areas - which we call service units. Each service unit is made up of dedicated (and amazing) volunteers who act as a team to provide Girl Scout activities, events, and programs to each local community. Many service unit volunteers are also troop leaders who work directly with the girls to achieve all the benefits the Girl Scout Leadership Experience has to offer! Girl Scouts is a safe place for girls to be accepted and inspired. We are committed to strict standards regarding criminal background checks for adult volunteers and follow all of Girl Scouts of the USA's Safety Guidelines. GSNI has five service centers located in Elgin, Freeport, Rock Falls, Rockford, and Sugar Grove; and four camp facilities located in Illinois, including Big Rock, Hanover, Harvard, and Stillman Valley. Each service center houses council staff and has its own Council Store, with an additional stand-alone store, Girl Scout Express, in the IceHouse Mall in Barrington, Illinois. GSNI is governed by a volunteer Board of Directors which includes Associate Directors who are girl members of Girl Scouts. Each year GSNI holds an annual meeting where voting members, girls and adults aged 14 and above, elect the council's governing body. An audit of the council is conducted annually. Our 990 is available for download, as is our Annual Report and our bylaws.
