Mission Statement
Our Mission : Literacy Chicago is a nonprofit that empowers individuals to achieve greater self-sufficiency through language and literacy instruction.
About This Cause
Our History: Literacy Chicago draws its history from two well-known Chicago-area literacy organizations: The Literacy Council of Chicago, founded in 1968 and Literacy Volunteers of Chicago, established in 1968. Recognizing that they could make a greater impact on the city’s literacy needs as a combined entity, the two nonprofit groups merged in 1992, creating the organization now known as Literacy Chicago. What We Do: Literacy Chicago is a nonprofit that services nearly 500 adults in numerous Chicago neighborhoods with tuition-free classes and / or one-on-one tutoring in ● Adult Literacy : teaches reading, comprehension and writing skills for those whose reading levels are considered illiterate. 882,000 Chicagoans, or nearly 30% of the population can’t read beyond a third or fourth grade level. ● Adult Basic Education (ABE): a pre-GED class for those whose reading levels are between 6 and 8th grades ● General Education Development (GED) : prepares adults 18 and older to pass the GED helping them to increase job opportunities and/or move on to higher education. ● English as a Second Language (ESL): teaches learners to improve their ability to speak, listen, read, and write in English, and includes civics education. ● Citizenship/ESL: prepares students on the essential skills in order to prepare for the citizenship and naturalization exam including an ESL component ● Workforce Development: a compilation of innovative programs to help learners at all levels achieve workplace goals. ● Digital Literacy: teaches both basic and advanced computer skills to bridge the digital divide.
