About This Cause
South Central Community Services, Inc. has provided programs and services to youth, seniors and adults in the south-side of Chicago communities of Greater Grand Crossing, Chatham, Avalon and South Shore for 52 years. The agency was originally founded in 1970 by the residents of Chatham and Avalon Park in response to the lack of mental health services for a growing number of children with emotional and behavioral disorders. In 1981 the agency expanded its programs and services to reflect the variety of changing needs in the surrounding communities and neighborhoods. The agency continues to evolve and change as the social, economic and demographic climate of the communities that we serve has changes Program & Services Overview: For Youth Ages 6-12 the agency provides After School Programming, Summer Enrichment Camps, Cooking Classes, Early Readers Classes, along with Sports & Recreation Programs. Additionally South Central has a "Special Needs Program" for High School & Grammar School youth who have emotional & have behavioral disorders. This program helps students transition back to their original school OR they can remain at South Central and graduate with a bona fide diploma. For "Needy Families" South Central host annual seasonal events in our Community Center to provide Thanksgiving Baskets, Christmas Toys for Youth and Free Christmas Tree giveaways. For Seniors South Central host the Brag Club for senior women who meet monthly to mingle, share a meal, dance, go on field trips and indulge in community work. Our efforts and legacy of quality services to the community have been recognized by several organizations. The Sara Lee Foundation honored South Central Community Services, Inc. with its coveted "Spirit Award" and the agency has also continued to be accredited by the Council on Accreditation (COA), and the National Association for Education of Young Children (NAEYC).
