INSTITUTE FOR LATINO PROGRESS

Chicago, Illinois, 60608-4809 United States

Mission Statement

Our mission is to contribute to the fullest development of Latino immigrants and their families through education, training, and employment that fosters full participation in the changing US society while preserving cultural identity and dignity.

About This Cause

For 46 years, Instituto has helped thousands of low-income, low-skill adults, and families learn English, achieve citizenship, improve their literacy skills, and complete training/vocational programs that have enabled them to achieve financial and employment stability. As an education innovation hub for the entire family, Instituto operates two STEM focused high schools: Instituto Health Sciences and Career Academy and Instituto Justice and Leadership Academy. Instituto also has nationally recognized career pathway programs in manufacturing, retail and health care. Recently, we launched our Instituto College, which provides ADN (RN) degrees to nursing students. Instituto is one of the largest processors of citizenship applications in Illinois. Instituto is based in Southwest Chicago, between the neighborhoods of Pilsen, Little Village, and Back of the Yards. Latinx make up over 80% of the population in the surrounding communities, with more than 28% of families below 100% of the Federal Poverty Line (FPL). In 2018, Instituto provided services to 8,400 people. The median family income in the area is $36,962 and the average family income for individuals seeking Instituto’s services is $19,000. This average is based on the self-reported annual income that each participant provides. Over 80% of Instituto’s participants are below FPL. OUR VISION EVERY PERSON– Our education pathways are built so that all people, regardless of skill level, can access them. We reach immigrants who are eager to learn English, single mothers who wish to launch fulfilling careers, and young people who have been pushed- or dropped-out of high school. We provide comprehensive pathways for individuals with incredible potential, but who are often underserved by traditional education systems. EVERY FAMILY- We stand true to our motto: Register the student, enroll the family. We know that engaging the entire family is central to lasting success. To this end, we offer integrated services for our families such as on-site child care while parents are in class, financial counseling so families can achieve stability, and transitional support for both college bound students and their parents. We enable entire families to address their needs while supporting and celebrating one another. EVERY COMMUNITY– Our work is paving the way for successful strategies around the country. We are partnering with organizations like our own to offer our expertise and help them develop pathways for their communities. We join state and national policy makers to create broader system changes that impact our families. We are a nationally recognized organization and we regularly open our doors so others can learn from our programs and approach. With a surge of new arrivals that began in May of this year, Instituto del Progreso Latino began accepting physical donations of new and unused clothes and other essential items to its buildings. In just over a month Instituto has received over 5,000 donated essential items which have been dispersed to various police districts, other non-profit organizations, housing sites and respites. Additionally, over 350 volunteers have signed up to volunteer and assist with Instituto's Project AMOR efforts. In service of our mission, Instituto offers a broad spectrum of academies and programs: Two High Schools, IHSCA and IJLA, Instituto College of Nursing & BNA Program, Career Pathways, Adult & Literacy Programs, After-school tutoring, Legal Aid and Community Services. In September of 2022, Instituto responded to the influx of new migrant arrivals to Chicago by launching Project AMOR (Asylum Migrant Outreach Response). In conjunction with the City of Chicago, Instituto created an Amazon Wishlist to mobilize donation efforts for this new population. Since the launch of the Wishlist, over $220,000 in essential items such as clothes, toiletries, diapers, and hygiene products, have been purchased by generous donors to help aid migrants. Instituto has also directly assisted over 120 asylum seekers by helping them obtain City Key IDs as well as providing them with legal services and case management. The Instituto Familia is ignited by our vision and passion to elevate the people we serve to fulfill their fullest potential, dream big and reach for the stars. Our ask is for your sponsorship to support our Una Familia Fundraiser on September 28, 2023. Instituto would recognize and highlight your institution through various channels, including mention within our annual report. With the outmost gratitude we appreciate your time and consideration. It would be an honor to have you continue be a part of our Instituto familia!
