Mission Statement
The Martin Luther King Center inspires greatness in the Quad Cities through community-building, education and service.
About This Cause
Founded in 1975, we are a community center and social services agency located in Rock Island, IL. We are best-known for our high-quality after-school program and summer day camp, offered at no cost to parents. We also have programs for substance abuse prevention among teens, teenage pregnancy prevention, and intensive community- and family-based counseling. From February-April, we are a site for free drop-in tax preparation assistance for qualified individuals and families. Volunteer-led programs include the ACTIVE (Aging Citizens Taking an Interest in a Variety of Experiences) Club, the Metropolitan Youth Drill Team, and the Rock Island Boxing Club. We also organize five events for the community each year: a Memorial and Award Service in honor of Dr Martin Luther King in January; a Legislative Breakfast, usually in April; Family Fun Day in August or September; Thanksgiving Dinner in November (we served 3,000 plates of food throughout the Quad Cities in 2020); and a Children's Holiday Party in December.
